Looking for a tutor with lots of experience and plenty of patience? I'm comfortable tutoring children, teens, and adults in many subjects. I worked as an elementary school teacher for 10 years in public and private schools, and am the mother of 3 grown children -- so nothing scares me! I've also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to children and adults, the TOEFL preparation course, ACT/SAT preparation, and adults taking the GED exam. My specialty is reading, writing, elementary math, ESL, and ACT/SAT preparation. I have a Master's in Education, and am a student-centered teacher (i.e., I don't lecture!), with an informal, friendly style. I believe the best way to remember what we've learned is when we're having fun, so I always bring interactive and educational games and activities with me to my lessons. My first meeting with prospective students and their families is always free -- to see what the student's strengths and challenges are, to make sure we have shared goals for the lessons, and to find out if we're a good match.

My daughter has worked with Katherine for more than a year now. We contacted Katherine for her experience with ESL students and degree in English. I am very happy to say that she is certainly the right choice.
We found that she is very helpful in preparing my daughter for college-entrance standardized tests (SAT&ACT), especially the Reading and Writing sections. Katherine is trained by Princeton Review to teach the SAT classes, she is definitely who you are looking for if you are seeking more focused and personalized lesson plans. She has done a great job helping my daughter with her vocabulary and grammar usage in writing.
Katherine is also great at editing many of my daughter's essays for school. They have worked on essay for English classes, for scholarships, and even for her upcoming college application. In addition, Katherine has fantastic teaching styles that makes her lessons engaging. She is also very patient and understanding.
My son who is 19 just loved working with Katherine. She was very helpful in the specific study of psychology as well as giving him tools to study in a different way than he had ever done previously.
Our Remy needed some extra help with his reading skills. Katherine did a wonderful job with him and he enjoyed his time with her. I would certainly recommend her.
I took several lessons when I was preparing for my TOEFL test. I was focused particularly on speaking section of TOEFL. Katherine provided me with all the resources I needed both for our lessons and for my self-education. I liked the structured approach Katherine offered me. I always received constructive feedback on every exercise I did. And as a result I learned very useful and easy strategies which I used during the real exam. I would recommend Katherine as an English tutor.
Katherine is a really knowledgeable and patient tutor. She is not just talented, but she's also a very caring person.
I benefited a lot from her instructions. She helped me with my writing and explained my mistakes clearly. I highly recommend her if you need any help with English.
My daughter had taken the ACT but wanted a better score, so we went looking for a tutor. Katherine has helped our daughter tremendously in gaining skills as well as confidence in herself. Katherine is very good at seeing which areas our daughter needed more help in so as to use the lessons efficiently. I highly recommend Katherine as a tutor who is patient, and truly cares for her student’s development.
Katherine has been wonderful to work with. My son is very frustrated with writing. He is not afraid to say how much he dislikes it and can be quite stubborn about it. Katherine has been very patient and encouraging with him. She discovered his love of history and ties their lessons to subjects he loves to discuss. My son may not be crazy about writing, but he really likes Katherine and says that she is a great tutor. From an administrative aspect, Katherine is easy to get a hold of and very organized. I would definitely recommend her as a tutor.
I enjoy conversation with her every week! Because she talks about American culture, tradition, politics, economy, it is not just an English lesson but learning everything about America. Of course it doesn't mean only she speaks. She also wants to learn Japan from me so I have a lot of opportunities to speak English. Every week, time flies.
We chose Katherine for ACT lessons for our son and could not have been happier with our selection.
Katherine knew just how to relate to a teenager and made us very comfortable right from the beginning. Our son's scores in his practice tests have improved tremendously under her guidance. Never has our son complained about going to his lessons, even if they cut into his weekends. Katherine was very flexible with changes we needed to make to the schedule and her correspondence with us was excellent. We always knew exactly what was taught and what the homework assignments were.
Not only did Katherine improve our son's English, she also gave him the confidence he will need for the upcoming ACT test. We know that he will do much better than in his previous tests.
We would highly recommend Katherine to any student who needs tutoring in English.
Thank you, Katherine!!
Katherine is an awesome teacher. I have seen the improvement on my writing. She is great teacher, easy to understand and very friendly. This is the first time using a tutor and I was very comfortable with her.
Katherine has been working with my daughter this summer for her ACT exam in Fall. All I can say is that my daughter has made tremendous improvement in her practice test scores so far and all because of how she preparing her for this exam. She is a wonderful person who works very enthusiastically with my daughter and keeps me updated with each step of her work.
I would highly recommend them as a great tutor to achieve good work habits, time management and the depth that Katherine goes in to teaching her students.
Katherine has been a wonderful tutor for my 7 year old special needs son this summer. From the start, she established a caring relationship with him and that has made a huge difference in his willingness to do the work. She understands his academic and emotional needs well and teaches in a creative and flexible way. He looks forward to his visits with Katherine! I highly recommend her as a tutor.
Katherine was very patient with my child. She was very easy to get a hold of and communicate with.
We started tutoring with Ms.Katherine this summer, it worked out really well for my son. She has great teaching skills and patience. Her method helped my son build his confidence in vocabulary and reading.
We recommended Ms. Katherine to few of our friends, they are glad to have her tutor their kids too. We would highly recommend her for your kids.
Katherine has done a great job keeping our son motivated. He can get frustrated very easily, and she is always able to get him back interested in his reading lesson by turning the lesson into a game. We have been thrilled with our son's progress, and he actually looks forward to going to his sessions.
Katherine is a wonderful tutor! She is extremely patient, very knowledgeable, kind, has a wonderful personality, is very approachable, etc., etc. We cannot say enough positive things about her. She has the perfect personality for teaching children. She really knows how to adapt to whatever your child may need, whether it be school-wise or personality-wise. Our daughter loved her instantly! Our other children who don't even use her as a tutor love her as well, which is terrific. I would highly recommend Katherine as a tutor, she is fantastic!
I'm currently a graduate student at George Washington University in Washington,D.C. I worked with Katherine before graduate school and I still continue to use her services while I complete my masters. She is extremely patient, efficient and organized. I would highly recommend her to any student that needs tutoring services.
Very nice, understanding, says a lot of cool things, good sense of humor and overall an excellent teacher.
Katherine was very professional and easily understood our needs. Our son said he got a lot out of the session and after taking the test on Monday says he probably did much better after meeting with Katherine on Sat. She was very friendly and I felt comfortable with her immediately.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a "docent" (Latin for teacher) at an art museum in Washington, DC for several years. In preparing for this volunteer position, all the docents were trained for a full year in art history by the director of the museum, which was an amazing experience! I've also taken many art history classes in university, and visited many, many art museums around the world. I am passionate about art and love learning and sharing my passion.
As a long-time teacher, I know that we all have learning differences -- but that dyslexia presents students with even more challenges. I'm a member of the International Dyslexia Association, have taken many seminars and attended conferences on dyslexia and other learning "disabilities," and have taught and privately tutored many students with a variety of learning challenges. In all cases, I've been able to make my students feel more confident and increased their reading, writing, and math skills. Nothing can substitute for a patient and supportive approach to students who are already feeling insecure.
I've been an elementary teacher since 2002, working in a variety of private and public school settings. My last full-time assignment was at a private, parent co-op school in Plymouth as 1 of 3 teachers in a multi-age classroom for 1st-4th grade students.
The school specialized in individualized teaching (our teacher to student ratio was approximately 1 teacher to 6 students!), so I'm used to working one-on-one with students of all abilities and ages.
In addition, I've also been a "regular" 1st grade teacher, and have taught a variety of resource classes to students from kindergarten through 8th grade, including Spanish, computer skills, and library.
I've been lucky to have taught ESL to students from the age of 4 through 40 years old, teaching everything from the alphabet to advanced grammar. My experience with young children includes working as an ESL teacher for elementary-aged students at the University of Michigan Northwood Community Center's English Language Program.
The intensive program is offered in the summer to prepare students to attend Ann Arbor public schools, and focuses on "survival" skills for beginning English language learners to more advanced reading and writing skills for intermediate students.
In addition, I've traveled extensively, and have learned (and tried to learn!) several languages, so I'm very familiar with the challenges of learning a foreign language. My students have come from China, Japan, India, Germany, Mexico, Italy, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Pakistan.
As an elementary teacher, I've taught phonics to both native speakers of English as well as non-native English speakers. I've also taught English as a Second Language for many years (to both children and adults), which emphasizes the learning of phonics. As a student of several other languages, I know how difficult our language is, and especially how challenging phonics is to learn!
I have taught many students to feel more confident in public speaking situations. As a Theater major in college, and as a professional teacher and trainer, I have lots of experience helping students learn the essential tricks and tips to make them feel more comfortable in a difficult situation. I know I can help you!
As a long-time teacher of all areas of English reading and writing, and as a trained SAT and ACT preparation teacher, I have helped many, many students prepare for a variety of standardized tests. Students have told me how much my tutoring has benefited them from basic study skills and test-taking tips, to specific grammar, reading comprehension, and writing sections.
