I have a BA in French Horn Performance, and a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting. I am certified in Math and Music (K-12). I have taught both Math and Music in public schools. Over the past several years I have mostly been teaching/tutoring privately.
For Math, I tailor my lessons to meet the needs of every individual student. Typically my lessons are broken down in the following way:
5% - 20% reviewing and expanding basic arithmetic skills and calculating "in the head"
10% - 60% filling in any holes in knowledge needed to be successful in Math.
40% - 70% mastery of work being studied by the student in school, helping with homework and test prep.
30% - 90% enrichment and honing of mathematical skills and expanding scope of understanding and topics in Math.
My particular strengths are in Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry, but I teach all levels from 5th grade through Pre-Calculus. I received a certificate of Excellence from Educational Testing Service (ETS) for my performance on the PRAXIS content knowledge test for Math.
For my Music students, I give a well rounded music education including understanding of the rudiments of music, harmony, theory, the physics of sound, technique on the playing of primary instrument, musicality and expression.
I have been teaching Brass instruments and Piano individually for over 40 years. Since moving to Ann Arbor 15 years ago, 90% of my brass students were 1st chair in the top band at their school by senior year.
