Hello all, my name is Jacob (Mister Z for students).
I just received a master's in secondary education at Oakland University, while also receiving a bachelor's in history before at the same college. During my internship as a student teacher at Groves High School, I developed this teaching philosophy which helped me with seeing great results in my U.S. History classes: "As a history teacher, my role is not to just tell students what to think or remember, but to gift them the skills necessary to engage with the world as informed and active citizens. I will do this by teaching students how to analyze historical events, participate in civic processes, and make responsible decisions with a foresight of how it will impact their communities. After refining one's historical literacy and civic engagement (petitioning, attending council meetings, and voicing grievances), students will handle history and their lives more wisely and responsibly. Thus, my goal is to create a classroom where students develop these skills, evaluate multiple perspectives, and take informed actions in a democratic society." I believe this philosophy translates well with all manners of teaching too, especially social studies.
I also gained some experience teaching middle schoolers throughout my internship in Oakland University's new MATSE program at Troy's school district. So, I am capable of mentoring all students on the secondary level. What's equally important though is my genuine passion for education and history. Meaning you may feel assured I will always show up to both tutor and teach with an air of excitement on any subject. Which is why I also believe meeting up for tutoring appointments at public libraries are essential. it helps us both with tackling any subject with a bountiful source of texts, and I can even bring my own books for help should I find they are helpful in a scenario.
It is my hope that parents and students will find this information helpful, and I also wish you all a pleasant day,
Jacob (Mister Z)
