Knowing how to read, write, and understand academic texts can be a challenging skill to develop, especially if you are doing it alone. As a tutor, I patiently guide students by asking questions that help them discover answers themselves and build confidence in their skills. Together, we develop effective reading, note-taking, and exam strategies to strengthen academic performance. I supplement textbook learning with multimedia resources, primary sources, and independent research to make lessons engaging and accessible. When working on writing, I teach students how to organize their ideas and use evidence to build clear, well-supported arguments. I also provide remote feedback on completed drafts to improve clarity and reinforce main ideas. I offer support in English, history, and the arts, including ongoing coursework assistance or one-time help with papers and applications. I work to balance the discomfort of learning and potentially failing at something new with positive feedback on students’ accomplishments to reinforce good habits and celebrate successes. My goal is to guide each student with curiosity and compassion toward success in advanced coursework, higher education, and future careers.

I bring over a decade of experience as a researcher, author, and educator to my tutoring sessions. I have lectured at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, Marymount Manhattan College, and Vassar College. My writing has been published in print and online in peer-reviewed journals, blogs, and textbooks, as well as translated for international publication. My award-winning work as a filmmaker has been featured in more than fifty film festivals worldwide, and I served as a judge at the Arlington International Film Festival. I earned my BA from Vassar College in International Studies (emphasizing History and Women & Queer Studies) with a minor in Film, and completed the SIT International Honors Program studying Human Rights in Nepal, Jordan, and Chile.

Holding a B.A. in International Studies with field research conducted in various countries, my academic work focuses on human rights and global advocacy. I provide students with a nuanced understanding of American history, enriched by comparative perspectives and critical analysis. Of particular focus is the global network that shaped the development of the Americas as we know them, from indigenous studies to economics to modern history.
Career Development

Career Development

I love working on resumes, CVs, bios, and applications. I have experience in the arts and academia, creating submission materials for jobs, fellowships, and college applications. I can also help with audition materials and interviews. I received career training from Vassar College, where I had one-on-one weekly tutoring and attended workshops from the Career Development Office.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I studied screenwriting and filmmaking at Vassar College, and my poetry has been featured at international poetry slams and local coffee houses. My work has appeared in Inklings at the Springdale Public Library, and I’ve written multiple feature-length films, short films, and plays. Whether you’re just getting started or polishing a final draft, I’m excited to help you find your voice and bring your creative vision to life.

English

I teach English to students from grade school through college, focusing on writing and composition, literary and textual analysis, and communication skills. As a published research author and creative writer, I provide professional feedback to help students improve. My focus as a tutor is guiding students to consistently produce clear, structured, evidence-based work in all forms and styles of writing. I offer targeted extracurricular practice for K-12 students in addition to homework help to improve English skills. For advanced students, I offer proofreading and editing services to strengthen existing work. I can also facilitate the brainstorming, research, and outlining process for both literary and academic work.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

Are you struggling to start an essay? Do you find the research and writing process overwhelming? Do you have ideas, and yet no idea what to do with them? Maybe you’ve already written something, but when you read it, the pages seem more like random thoughts instead of a cohesive essay? Many students have strong ideas, but struggle to turn those ideas into clear, well-structured essays. From outlining guidance and research review to proofreading and editing, I have tools for every stage of the essay writing process. I offer patient guidance to reduce stress and make steady progress toward your goals. I can help you write a persuasive argument by identifying and strengthening your thesis statement, improving structure and clarity, and highlighting where to support your claims with evidence. This approach works best for students who are ready to engage with their ideas and take an active role in the writing process. We can work together using the Wyzant platform to talk through your essay; I can read your work asynchronously and provide feedback and suggestions; or, we can combine these methods to expedite the process and efficiently improve your writing. My approach is informed by my experience as a published research author, with work appearing in peer-reviewed journals, books, and online.

As an International Studies major at Vassar College, I learned to analyze literature and other media to not only understand the story being told on the page, but to understand the context of the piece itself. Literature is a window into different times, worlds, and circumstances. It helps us understand humanity and ourselves. As a tutor, my job is to inspire further insight and questions. I particularly love helping people with essays and papers about literature. My specialty is women and queer studies. I can help with classic and modern literature, but I prefer contemporary literature. I would love to help you with AP Lit and college literature classes. Let's talk about symbolism, metaphors, and imagery!

I offer critical expertise and feedback for personal statements by helping students identify their thesis statement and support it using stories from their life. Thesis Writing

Creating a thesis project is one of the best things you can do to prepare yourself for a career in academia or the arts. It can also be one of the most daunting and difficult college undertakings. I am here to guide you through every stage of the process and support you with kind enthusiasm. I hold a BA in International Studies with an emphasis in Women and Queer Studies and Decolonial History, and a minor in Film from Vassar College. My academic work includes an independent study analyzing gender construction and the gaze in Deepa Mehta’s film Fire, and a senior thesis project titled Identity, which featured interviews with queer women discussing their identities, gender expression, and community. Through the SIT International Honors Program, I studied human rights in Nepal, Jordan, and Chile, culminating in a thesis examining social justice filmmaking and global autonomy. Acacia is so sweet, knowledgeable and inspires me to dig deep into myself and really think about my writing in a perspective that has felt unknown to me. I feel like I learn something new and new about myself that helps me with my writing each time we have a lesson. 10/10 you won’t regret booking an appointment with Acacia!

Extremely efficient, goes above and beyond

Hello, I was on the verge of failing a course. I scheduled two sessions, just a day before my 10-page paper was due. My topic was on Generative AI, Gender, Appropriation, and Hip-Hop. Not only did I complete the paper with detailed written feedback from Acacia as well as live sessions walking through my notes. I appreciated how I was able to recieve help while writting live, it felt as if it was an in-person. I appreciate how responsive to emails and messages Acacia was as well. I recommend you book, no lie!

Patient and Engaging Tutor for Kids

We’ve had a wonderful experience with our Wyzant tutor, Acacia. My son is only 6 years old, and Acacia has shown incredible patience and understanding in every lesson. It’s not always easy to keep a young child focused, but Acacia does an amazing job engaging him in a way that feels natural and fun. What really stands out is how the lessons blend learning with games and interactive activities. My son genuinely looks forward to each session and stays interested the entire time, which says a lot at his age. The lessons are well-structured while still being flexible enough to match his pace and energy level. I also really appreciate the encouraging and positive approach. Acacia creates a comfortable environment where my son feels confident participating and trying new things. We’ve already seen improvement, and more importantly, he’s developing a love for learning. I highly recommend Acacia to anyone, especially for younger children. The lessons truly go above and beyond to be both effective and enjoyable.

ACACIA is WONDERFUL 💜 knowledgeable PATIENT versatile & KIND!

This was my first lesson, first tutor, and practically my first time using a virtual platform. Acacia was GREAT. I completely forgot I was nervous within a minute or two. [In my personal life when I ask for help with stuff like this, I feel I’m bothering someone who’s in a hurry (my kid) and pretty sure I can sense eye-rolls 😂] It’s WAY better to hire someone who WANTS to do this for a living. Acacia put me at ease and he’s just the person I want & need to help me with my projects. What a treat and I can’t wait to review again later after we’ve worked together longer. *** BONUS his prices are so reasonable!!***

Very patient and very resourceful

Acacia worked with me on some Canva issues I’ve been having. Acacia was really thorough when trying to help me with a bit of an obscure issue. Acacia was super resourceful and understood the many ways to problem solve that would have taken me a long time to figure out myself. Very glad I worked with Acacia! Great experience and we will be working together again.

Thorough and Helpful

Acacia made sure to understand the type of assistance I was needing, and provided honest and helpful direction. They asked questions and reviewed some work I had already completed in session, which I appreciated. Upon ending our first lesson, I already felt more confident about how to move forward and what needed my attention most. I’m looking forward to continued lessons with them!

Great public speaking tutor

Ms. Acacia did a great job helping my little sister get better at public speaking, covering a wide range of topics and tailoring the tutoring on the areas she had problems with. She is noticeably better at speaking and interacting with others now and is always putting what she learned into practice. Acacia's patience and understanding created a supportive learning environment where my normally very shy sister felt comfortable expressing herself. We're both very grateful for the progress she's made and highly recommend Acacia to anyone looking to improve in this area.
