I have a B.S. in Chemistry from Lee University and an M.S. in Environmental Sustainability from the University of Michigan. I've always loved teaching and have a range of experiences in tutoring. In grad school, I was a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for an undergraduate chemistry lab (1 semester). I also spent several months during grad school volunteering as a tutor for a 4th grader in reading and grammar. During my undergraduate studies, I was a Teaching Assistant (T.A.) for General Chemistry, and I tutored students in various courses, including Physics and Philosophy (~2 years). In high school, I was a T.A. in a 1st grade classroom, and I taught piano lessons to a few young students (ages 6, 8 and 10).
I love taking complex subjects like Organic Chemistry or Physics and breaking them down into simple, digestible ideas. I have the most experience teaching college-age students, but I am comfortable teaching students of all ages, from grade school through undergrad or grad school. My bachelor's degree is in chemistry, so I have the most expertise in General Chemistry (I & II) and Organic Chemistry (I & II), but I am also a huge math lover and would be eager to tutor students in any math course up to Calculus II.
I am a strong believer that the value of school is in truly learning and understanding topics, not just memorizing facts to get a grade. If you are struggling with difficult concepts or stressing about an exam, I would be eager to come alongside you and help you to not only succeed and 'get the grade', but to truly understand the subjects you're learning and gain lasting knowledge and expertise.
