Michigan State University (Arts and Humanites)
Recent Michigan State University graduate from the Residential College in the Arts & Humanities with an additional Spanish major. Currently I am enrolled in International TEFL Academy courses in which I must complete student teaching, tutoring or observation within a TEFL setting. Domestically I have worked with Mt. Hope Elementary, CeLTA of MSU and the Office of Study Abroad at MSU as well. Abroad I have instructed English courses utilizing ESL activities and rural tourism courses at a high school in Palmichal, Costa Rica. This past summer I served as a Program Coordinator/Teacher Intern for Cambio Creativo in Coco Solo, Panama. My task was to instruct students with homework assignments while facilitating an after school program for the youth. Additionally I served as an English Teaching Volunteer for a high school in conversational classes and Panamanian-United States relations.
I have vast experience in the classrooms of the Lansing Area, but additionally throughout Central America. With my organizations I have encountered a lack of funding, technology and infrastructure necessary for instructing. This has led me to be an innovative, flexible and creative instructor no matter the circumstances that I will encounter. In the past I took part in a crash course ESL class, but currently I am enrolled in classes to receive certification.
Throughout high school I took four years of Spanish including Advanced Placement and an Excelled Spanish Course. In college I majored in Spanish and had the opportunity to study abroad. I have lived in Costa Rica and Panama which has exposed me to very different dialects compared to my instructors from Spain. Now I serve as a Volunteer Coordinator for Cambio Creativo in Panama in which I am constantly in communication with Spanish speakers.
My wide variety of course work has exposed me to a multitude of different periods, eras and regions that each offer a unique historical context. The topics of American History were definitely ingrained in me from my primary education along with World History, I have enrolled in college courses on Greek, Latin American, Spain and American History.
Please contact me if any of my qualifications could fulfill your academic goals or needs. My schedule is flexible and would love to offer my knowledge to others. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
