It's Elementary, Dear Watson (or John, or Rebecca, or...)

My name is Shawn, and I have six years of teaching experience working as a substitute teacher. While I do not actually have a teaching certificate, I did go back to school to pursue a Masters in Education. Prior to subbing, I spent a few years working with kids at camp, where I was a high ropes instructor, a camp health officer, and even worked the kitchen making lunches for 100+ kids at a time, all by myself!

One of the things that I love the most about tutoring is being able to give individual attention to the learner. There is nothing more frustrating than not understanding something, and feeling like you're being left behind. Being able to provide each learner the individual attention they need to be successful is an amazing feeling. I won't give you the answers, but I certainly will do my best to provide you with the tools necessary for you to be able to find the answers every single time.

I have spent three of the past four years working with a large, national testing company, scoring standardized test. Most of the questions I have scored have been in elementary math. I recently went back to school for a computer programming degree and helped lead study groups with adult learners, may of which had not studied math for 20+ years (myself included!).

There are fewer things that I have spent more time doing, over the past few years, than reading with my daughters (ages 9 and 6). While we read, we take time to talk about the different parts of the story and what might happen next. Reading not only takes practice, but it also takes someone listening who has the ability to guide the reader in ways that will make them more aware of ways to improve upon their reading abilities.

I'm excited to get the opportunity to work with you. There is nothing that I want more, than to help provide tools for you to be able to understand and be successful in the subject(s) you need assistance with.
