I have a bachelors degree from Michigan State University in chemistry, with a minor in math and physical science. I also took the classes required to achieve certification. In Illinois, I taught chemistry, advanced chemistry, physics, physical science, pre algebra, basic math, and computer programming. I earned my Masters degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. After 5 years of teaching, I became an analytical chemist (it paid better). Over the next 34 years, I advanced to engineer, quality manager, and ultimately the Director of Quality for an automotive supplier. During that time I earned a Masters in Engineering Management from the University of Colorado - Boulder.
Due to heath reasons, I had to leave the private sector with its accompanying stress. So, I’m in semi-retirement looking for ways to boost my income. On a personal note, I’m married and have 11 children, the youngest of which is 17 and currently in college. I have tutored my children and occasionally some children of friends, and I was a tutor at Michigan State, but otherwise the bulk of my tutoring was when I was helping students one on one.
I think I have an advantage in that I have seen chemistry, math, and science being applied in the workforce. Even as Director of Quality, I was tapping into my chemistry background to solve issues. Obviously, I learned a lot after I entered the private sector. I’ve taught a lot of students with learning disabilities, and my youngest son is autistic. I don’t have a particular teaching style; I adapt to the student.
