Greetings!
I am Daniel Y.
I am the coordinator of the physics program at John Jay College, the City University of New York. I have been privileged to serve as physics coordinator since 2012. I continue to teach an average of four physics courses per semester while assisting and managing an enthusiastic team of adjunct physics faculty members. I have been teaching and tutoring physics, mathematics, philosophy, and related topics for more than 30 years.
For years and years, while at John Jay, I also taught one physics course a year for advanced high school seniors at Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn, New York. Before coming to John Jay, I worked as a full-time physics, math, and astronomy teacher at independent high schools across the country, including Isidore Newman in New Orleans, Cary Academy in North Carolina, the Berkshire School in Massachusetts, and more. In short, I love working with students of all ages and all abilities. I cannot imagine not teaching, and I cannot imagine teaching only one type of idea to only one type of person.
I hold a Ph.D. in Science Education from Columbia University and a Master's Degree in Physics from City College of New York. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Amherst College with a Bachelor's degree in both Physics and Philosophy.
Physics, calculus, and trigonometry can sometimes sound or seem intimidating at first. I have found, however, that with a little open-mindedness and a little patience, just about anyone can break through the most seemingly frustrating of mental barriers. To me, there is nothing quite like the joy of discovering that we knew something all the while; we just did not know we knew it. The main thing I strive to share: the tips and techniques for 'knowing what to do when we don't know what to do'.
I can be flexible about scheduling and even rates when circumstances are challenging; I mainly wish to help.
Let's figure something out!
