About Mary Kay

As a non-traditional student with much determination, I graduated with a Master of Arts degree in the field of Elementary Education and Special Education. My course of study was challenging, but I graduated with a GPA of 3.8 in June of 2000. Now that I have retired after 14 years of teaching, I miss those "aha!" moments when children experience success even if they believe they cannot. As someone who has taught students with special needs of all kinds and various degrees of disability, I feel I have experienced many ways to teach a concept. whether it is in math or any other subject. I have a Maine teacher certification for grades K-8 in the regular education setting and K-12 in the special education setting. I am a firm believer that if students feel accepted where they are and have a positive experience with our learning sessions, they will flourish ultimately because of their own efforts. Every child is an individual, and all students do not learn the same way or at the same pace. BUT...All students can learn.

I taught for years at an area elementary school. I have also taught as a long-term substitute at a grade school. My first year in Maine, I taught at another elementary school. My experience as well as my instincts have shown me that a relationship with a student is of the utmost importance. When work is rigorous, some students struggle to complete work because of overwhelming frustration. Now that most texts are aligned with the Common Core Standards, parents also struggle to understand what the teacher is looking for and experience confusion over how to help their student. Together, we can sort that out.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

My graduate degree is in the realm of special education and was described as Varying Exceptionalities on my diploma. This was one of the exceptionalities that was included in my teaching method instruction. I have also had the privilege of having students with this challenge in my classroom as well as the resource room.

Drawing

Since I completed my master's degree I have continued to attend classes, especially visual arts classes. My goal has been to qualify for the endorsement for art teacher in our state. A PRAXIS test and internship is all I am lacking to officially be certified for the ARTS. I have served as the "unofficial" art teacher in my own as well as other teachers classrooms because our little rural school does not have an art teacher.

Elementary (K-6th)

My bachelor's degree is in elementary education. Originally certified in Florida, I have enjoyed teaching as a regular education classroom teacher for most of my career. The way I have been able to accomplish this is to work half-day in the classroom, and half-day in the resource room.

Special Needs

My graduate degree is in the realm of special education and was described as Varying Exceptionalities on my diploma. The philosophy of the program was that students with special needs can be included in regular education settings unless they need more intense, specially prescribed instruction with special education resources instead of supporting the classroom work. In my career, I have taught in the regular education setting that included some students who also received resource room services. I have also taught in the resource room with small groups as well as individuals.
