Hello future students and parents,
My name is Summer. I attended the University of Maine Farmington through my junior year majoring in Special Education with a minor in English literature. I took a few years off from school and have since had 3 children. I recently returned to college, now with a major in Legal Studies as I currently work as a Legal Assistant for a local attorney. I also work evenings for the Lawrence Adult Education Department.
While I chose not to complete my Bachelors in Special Education in lieu of Legal Studies, I do have significant education in the field of Special Education and in English literature. I've tutored my brother who has severe learning disabilities for the last 10 years which has enabled him to remain at nearly grade level despite his significant delays. My young son also has special needs and I have acted as his mother, tutor and advocate. Additionally, I have tutored students of all abilities throughout various times since the age of 16. I'm also an active member of Literacy Volunteers.
My techniques do of course vary some according to the student, but ultimately I try to find out what the child is interested in and gauge my activities in that regard. If topics can be made applicable to the student's life, I find retention and comprehension rates are much higher.
Please note, I have oodles of patience!
Sincerely,
Summer M.
