Hi, my name is Ian. I'm an M.D. and medical writer. I'm also an experienced tutor and academic coach. I currently tutor for the MCAT, USMLE exams, and shelf exams for medical students. I also provide medical school admissions counseling for pre-med students who need guidance for their applications. This includes mock interviewing, personal statement and AMCAS/AACOMAS activities descriptions editing, and help with identifying a list of schools to apply to.

I also tutor non-medical students in any of the biological sciences. I'm fascinated by almost all subjects in the field, and pride myself on my ability to make them interesting and understandable to my students.

Finally, I offer traditional college counseling services. I've written more application essays in my life than I can remember, and have been helping others hone theirs for the better part of ten years. I always aim to help students tell their story in the most compelling way, without sacrificing their voice in the editing process.

I have been taking, and excelling at standardized tests my entire adult life. As a linguist, and non traditional undergraduate and medical student, I have used and developed highly effective study techniques. I genuinely enjoy passing this knowledge on to others, whether that be in the form of subject material, test preparation and test taking strategies, or general study skills. I offer evidence-based teaching and test-taking strategies to help my students excel. I look forward to sharing my passion for learning and helping you reach your academic goals!

I was an airborne cryptologic linguist, and learned both Farsi and Pashto in less than two years. I then applied to college as a nontraditional student, and graduated from Columbia University, where I majored in Biology with a focus on genetics and microbiology. After Columbia, before medical school, I helped start a successful biotechnology company, and hold two patents in the field. I then attended and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Study Skills

I have constantly balanced being an excellent student with other obligations. In my senior year of high school I took 6 AP classes while working as a restaurant manager upwards of 20 hours a week. In the military, I was an airborne cryptologic linguist, and learned two foreign languages in less than a year each. I was the top graduate of my Pashto course, and third in my class for Persian-Dari. Throughout these courses, I had to balance my time with the rigors of military life and training which included courses in education, learning theory, and time management. In medical school, having efficient and effective study habits was of the utmost importance to succeed and allowed me to receive excellent pre-clinical and clinical grades. These experiences have necessitated that I develop excellent study skills in order to accomplish all of my academic goals, and I look forward to passing them on to others!

Knowledgeable and Excellent Tutor

For anyone reading this, I can't speak highly enough about Ian. He is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met, and by far the best tutor for medicine I've ever experienced. Going through questions with him single handily got me out of hole of bad habits and poor clinical reasoning that I couldn't have done on my own. And in his own humble way would not take an ounce of credit for it. He is very straight forward with his students in an effective way that manages to get the best out of you. Further, he actually cares and is invested in your success such that he notices patterns in your reasoning towards your mistakes and suggests actual solutions to those problems and ways to combat the errors YOU face- and not just what is common in successful medical students. - well unless you're a fan of highlighting. lol but regardless, he is a wonderful teacher that wont bulshit you about your life for 20 min and then listen to you read questions for 40. He will actually be engaged in a medical discussion and helping you come to reasonable conclusions yourself. His demeanor in this regard, was always professional and treated me with the upmost respect. If you're studying for step 2ck, And sincerely I imagine for anything else don't waste your time looking elsewhere just book Ian - you wont regret it.
