About Brian

Bio

I am a state certified music teacher who specializes in guitar tutoring. I taught general music for six years in Portland and Westbrook schools, during which I earned K-12 certification (Endorsement 614). I have been teaching private guitar for over 15 years. I also teach electric bass, ukulele, singing, songwriting, sight singing, beginners piano, music theory and music history.

I have a Master's in Music Composition from Hunter College/CUNY in New York City. I had to prepare several pieces for that degree, including a string quartet, piano suite, and viola sonata. A composition I wrote for flute and harp was awarded Special Mention in a 2006 music contest in Italy.

I studied Ear Training for 4 semesters at NVCC in Virginia, in conjunction with my Music Theory classes, for a total of 16 credits and a 4.0 GPA. At Hunter College in NYC, I took 6 credits of Music Theory/Ear Training for a combined 3.9 GPA. I incorporated ear training into my K-12 lessons while teaching general music in Portland and Westbrook schools for 6 years.

I am a Maine certified K-12 music teacher. I taught K-12 general music in Portland and Westbrook schools for six years. I also received specialized training in general music education at Gordon College in Massachusetts during two summers.

I have been playing acoustic and electric guitar for over 30 years and teaching it privately for over 15 years. I currently perform in the Portland, Maine area for special events and weddings. At NVCC in Virginia, I studied guitar privately for 4 semesters with a combined GPA of 4.0.

At NVCC in Virginia, I studied Music History for two semesters and received a combined 4.0 GPA. At Hunter College/CUNY in NYC. I studied Advanced Music History for two semesters for a combined GPA of 3.9. I also taught a combined Music History/Theory course through the Portland Adult Education system for two years.

I studied piano privately for two years at Catholic U. in DC and for two semesters at Mannes School in NYC. At NVCC in Virginia, I studied piano for five semesters and received a combined 4.0 GPA. While teaching for 2 years at St. Brigid's school in Portland, ME I taught a keyboarding class to Middle School students.
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

I was trained to sight sing while earning my Master's degree in music at Hunter College in NYC and my Associates degree in music at NVCC in Alexandria, VA. I also practiced sight singing when performing chorus music. As a classroom music teacher, I taught sight singing to K-12 students in the Portland area.
Songwriting

I’ve been performing songs in various styles as a guitarist and singer throughout Maine and New England for the past seven years. You can listen to my own original songs on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. I also helped K-12 students write songs as a classroom music teacher in Portland area schools.
