Hi, my name is John! I graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Middlebury College and now serve as a Senior Data Science Technical Lead at WHOOP, where I lead a team developing machine learning-driven features to help users improve their fitness and health. I have been tutoring mathematics for the past ten years, primarily focusing on Pre-calculus & Calculus I–III, helping high school and college students strengthen their understanding of foundational and advanced calculus concepts, while also spending some time teaching Algebra I and Geometry.
I believe math is a beautiful, creative discipline that everyone is capable of learning, but too often, the way it's taught turns students away from it. Many struggle not because they lack ability, but because they were never given the right foundation to build their intuition. My tutoring approach focuses on first-principles thinking, helping students understand the "why" behind the math rather than just memorizing formulas. By using visual explanations, real-world examples, and problem-solving techniques, I aim to reignite curiosity and show students the elegance of mathematics. Whether guiding younger students through algebra or helping college students navigate multivariable calculus, I strive to leave them with not just improved skills, but a newfound appreciation for the subject.
