My career in education has spanned thirty years, and has included commendation for K-16 teaching, curriculum specialization, scholarly work in Chinese linguistics and language pedagogy, high school and college departmental leadership, and administration for international student academics and residential life. I have lived and worked professionally for nearly a third of my life in a Chinese speaking country, and believe that my linguistic and cultural fluency, along with my global educational perspective have contributed to a reputation among my colleagues as an informed and insightful colleague and a collaborator willing to work hard in planning for student success. To my students, I think I am appreciated for my passion and energy, for my accessibility and care, for my example as a successful learner, and for maintaining high standards and rigor in guiding them on an individual and sometimes life-changing path towards global citizenship. Parents are commending of my efforts and ability to communicate and collaborate for their children’s success, and for integrating their children’s learning within the context of the whole school.
I have ACTFL Superior level oral proficiency, 30 years classroom teaching in selective middle schools, high schools and colleges in the U.S. and abroad, 17 years living experience in a Chinese speaking country, and a Maine state certification.
My career as a language teacher, coupled with ESL teaching experience (Grade 8-adult) and theoretical study at the graduate level has given me a good foundation in the theory and practice of writing. Recent two years were spent in an 8th grade humanities class, working in a support position with ESL students, and in a position to collaborate with planning, teaching and assessing of student writing.
My success as a Chinese language was built on a combination of passion, hard work, opportunity and the support of teachers and others who understood my needs and partnered with me on a path to success. While I can't make you work hard unless you yourself want to, and I can't command passion in you, I will bring all my passion and skill as a teacher to guide you as far as you care to go with your learning in a way that may just change your life. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
