Hi there!

My name is Alejandra, and I've been working as a tutor for high school and college students for the past ten years. I offer highly personalized academic support for a small number of long-term students and clients.

I feel that ALL students benefit from the one-one-one focused attention of a tutor, whether they are struggling academically or not. I maintain an active tutoring roster of only eight students at any given time, so that I can bring my maximum focus to each student's individual needs.

I graduated from Yale with Honors in English & Spanish Literature in 2004. I have recently moved back to my hometown of Portland, Maine, after years in New York City, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

I provide tutoring sessions tailored to the students' individual needs. While my specialties are English (literary analysis & writing skills) and Spanish (all levels), I also love to tutor History (American & World), and have years of experience teaching these subjects. While these areas represent my core strengths, I enjoy teaching any subject - even science and math. I embed lessons about study skills and organization into every session.

I also have many years of experience working with students as they prepare for the daunting days of standardized tests, including the ACT/SAT and GRE.

I teach piano and guitar lessons to beginning and intermediate students.

Finally, I offer in-depth college counseling and college essay brainstorming, composition guidance, and essay editing.

Students respond well to my friendly, relaxed approach, and I enjoy getting to know my students as people and helping to guide them through their high school or college years. If you are looking for long-term academic support and personalized guidance and mentoring, please don't hesitate to contact me today.

I look forward to working with you or your student!

Best Wishes,
Alejandra

English literature is more than my major - it is my passion. In college I was exposed to the greatest classic writers in English (Chaucer, Milton, Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens) and have since become obsessed with the modern masters (Ellison, Joyce, Woolf). I enjoy teaching students how to craft a literary analysis paper, helping them with difficult novels and poems, working with them on creative writing and college essays, and proofreading student work.

Writing

I am a writer at heart and have worked with students on their writing skill for many years now. In my experience, students who struggle with writing can unlock their potential using just a few powerful tools and tips. In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, I worked as a writing coach in the Chapel Hill-Carborro public school system, and taught a writing workshop at Duke University. I came to love helping students feel empowered through their writing. It's a special and powerful skill for people of all ages to appreciate and tap into.

History

American History,

American History

One of the subjects I've been asked to tutor most is American History (College-Level, AP, Honors, College Prep). Over the years I've tutored nearly twenty students in this subject area as they prepare for standardized tests or just seek extra help with their classwork. It's one of my favorite subjects to tutor; I love the characters, the concepts, and following the massive sweep of historical change in the United States through the centuries. I believe learning U.S. History explains ourselves to ourselves. In college I took several U.S. History classes including African-American History, Religion in Modern America, and The American Century.

I've played piano since I was five years old, and guitar since I was fifteen. Music is my greatest passion in life, and I love sharing this passion with students. Very knowledgeable and patient

Alejandra is one of the best tutor so far. She helped me with my essays for my Criminology class last semester which was a very hard. Also she helped me to summarize all the material from a few chapters and get the information that was most important for my exam. This semester, she helped me with a research paper, bibliography and with a Sentence Style class. She is very knowledgeable with all the subjects that she helped me with. I always get so much done in such a short period of time with her. My grades have improved since I started seen her. I am very pleased with finding Alejandra thru this website. She is patient, kind and very bright!

Saved my sanity and English grade!

I was at a point and time where I had a D- in my English and pretty much accepted the fact that I needed to drop the class to continue on with my other classes. I had no idea how to analyze literature and figured that's "just the way I was". Through a last resort effort of signing up on WyzAnt, I met Alejandra. She literally SAVED me. In one session, she explained literature analysis in a way to me that I could finally understand. I met with her once a week for a month until the semester ended. By the end of the semester, I had raised that D- to an A-!!! Not only did I get a good grade, but I learned an immense amount. I can't recommend her enough.

Diligent, supportive and patient tutor.

I was extremely pleased to work with Alejandra. She is professional and prompt at all times. I really can’t speak highly enough of her and the help she provided to me with my literary assignments. Her feedback was very valuable! Thank you.

Our son enjoys Alejandra and more importantly his 5 in AP World History shows he is having success

Our son looks forward to his time with Alejandra. He actually has fun with her. She is a spectacular tutor and the best writing coach we could hope desire. Her command of history (world and US) drives the sessions. My wife and I recommend her without reservation.

Patient, Motivating Tutor!!

I really recommend Alejandra as a standardized test prep tutor. I needed help for the GRE General exam and felt very hopeless about my situation, especially the writing section. I did not know how to study for it at all. Thankfully, Alejandra devised a plan to help me understand the writing section (and the other sections) and we practiced writing several essays together. The tutoring obviously worked because I got a 5. So if you are in need of standardized test prep help, please don't hesitate to contact Alejandra!
