My full name is Kevin M. I am 5 feet and 7 inches tall with a slight build. I have profound bilateral hearing loss and have been deaf since the age of two. I was educated in a public school with mainly hearing children and learned through an ASL interpreter until my graduation. I have been involved in many activities such as baseball, basketball, football and bowling.
I have taught hearing people some sign language along the way, but mostly I spoke English with my peers. I believe in a bilingual approach when it comes to education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, with ASL being their first language. In fact, I would go as far to say that even ASL as a first language for hearing babies will help their communication skills as they process information from the world.
My desire is to become a Special Education teacher with a background in Deaf studies. I hold an Associates degree in Elementary Education and studied History for 4 years with a background in Psychology in two different Universities. I have worked closely with Deaf adults with severe mental and physical disabilities for 7 years. I have worked with Deaf youths with a total of 5 years of experience from age 4 to 21.
My son and daughter who are both hearing, benefit from bilingual parents. My son who is 20 months old, knows well over 70 signs and counting. He also speaks some words with clarity. My passion is to teach kids who are receptive to learning new languages as they develop. There is nothing more inspiring than to see young children pick up new information and demonstrate what they have learned. As a tutor, I would be building on my resume while enriching the lives of children as they put together the pieces of a bigger world.
