I have a bachelor's degree in English. For several years while earning that degree, I worked as a peer English tutor on campus. After graduation, I was hired to manage the tutoring department, a job I loved because it allowed me to work with students on both sides of the tutoring relationship, training those who did the tutoring to be great "teachers" as well as working with the students receiving the tutoring to assess their specific challenge areas and see that they got exactly the help they needed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
