About Mike

Hello,

My name is Mike. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Lyndon State College in 1991. I have twenty-two years of experience as a professional math tutor and have successfully tutored over two hundred students in a variety of math and science courses, including Algebra, Geometry, all levels of Calculus and Statistics. My experience includes employment at Lyndon State College, North Shore Community College and the University of Oklahoma. I have worked with high school and college students in groups and individually.

When tutoring, I always tailor my instruction to meet the needs of my students. I help students solve math problems by providing illustrative examples that are similar to the assigned problems. When demonstrating the solution to a problem I use techniques and strategies that are most easily understood by the student. I am willing to travel to locations in and near the towns of Sanford, Alfred, Waterboro, Lyman, Biddeford, Saco, Kennebunk and Wells. I am available for tutoring on the following days and times:

Monday through Friday 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Saturday & Sunday 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm

My interest in mathematics is very strong, and I enjoy helping other people learn these subjects. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have twenty-two years of experience as an Algebra 1 tutor and have instructed dozens of students on this subject. I have helped many students gain a better understanding of the following topics:
- Linear equations and their graphs
- Slopes and intercepts
- Parallel and perpendicular lines
- Systems of linear equations with 2 variables
- Square roots
- Factoring
- Quadratic equations

I help students solve algebra problems by providing illustrative examples that are similar to the assigned problems. When demonstrating the solution to a problem I use techniques and strategies that are most easily understood by the student.

Knowledgeable and Conscientious

Mike arrived on time, and was very accommodating and ready to adapt to our needs and situation. My daughter said she looked at the clock and expected that half an hour had passed, only to find that the whole hour session was nearly over. Mike kept her focused and engaged throughout - we found his support very helpful.
