About Jim

Bio

I am Jim. Many years ago, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. After spending two years working, I went back and received my Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. However, my academic credentials are not what set me apart as a tutor. I have spent well over three decades in the aerospace industry putting academic principles into practice and mentoring the younger generations in the ways of STEM.

I work in the aerospace industry and have had a wide range of experiences that tend to make my subject areas come to life. I have been involved in launching rockets, UAVs and large scientific balloons. I spend a lot of time reading up on the latest hotness in various technical fields in order to put theory into practice.

Throughout my 30-year career in the aerospace industry, tutoring and mentoring have been a big part of my life. In perhaps my most formal teaching endeavor, I prepared and delivered a 16-week duration short-course on particle and rigid body dynamics for interested individuals working for a well known space oriented agency. I was given the opportunity to conduct a guest lecture series on orbital mechanics for a Space Systems class at a local university.

I have been tutoring online since 2019. During this time, I have provided thousands of live lesson sessions in a variety of topics with several tutoring relationships that spanned multiple semesters. I tutor in STEM, and STEM is about solving problems. My best tutoring sessions consist of helping students work through challenging problems and watching the concepts click as we find solution approaches that work for them.

C++

C++

As a substantial part of my duties as an aerospace engineer, I have been writing and deploying C++ software for flight systems, mission critical ground systems, and sophisticated engineering modeling applications since 1993. I utilized the object oriented nature of the language to develop a modular aerospace simulation tool in 1999 that is still being maintained and used to model flight dynamics and predict performance of various flight systems. I have been the flight and ground software lead of an airborne telescope pointing system. The flight software of this system is written almost entirely in C++ (with bits of C). I am currently the flight software lead for a solar coronagraph pointing system (also written in C++ and C) slated to be deployed in August 2024. I have logged countless hours mentoring young employees, showing them strategies for quickly coming up to speed on the language in efforts to quickly onboard them for contributing to sophisticated code bases. I have also spent many hours tutoring students in this language on the Chegg Tutors and TutorMe platforms.
Linux

Linux

I have watched the development of the Linux O/S throughout my 35+ year career in the aerospace industry. I was a Linux enthusiast as it progressed from a hobby-grade O/S to owning the server space in the 1990's. I participated in its introduction into the embedded flight-software space in the early 2000's. I have personally deployed Linux on 3 flight control systems and many ground monitoring systems -- all having varying real-time low-latency requirements. Linux has been my primary desktop O/S since 2007. I have tutored many students in the use of the Linux O/S command line bash environment and C systems API.
Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

I have worked in the aerospace industry for 35+ years and continue to do so. My career-long emphasis has been in the disciplines of flight dynamics and flight control systems. This has included practical applications of many of the fundamental mechanical engineering subjects including: statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural vibrations, heat transfer, and applied statistics. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to mentor students at all levels from high-school to graduate studies. For the past 5 years or so, i have actively tutored engineering students on the Chegg Tutors and TutorMe platforms. It has been my privilege to help ensure that the next generation of engineers is competent and equipped to practice their craft.
Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics

In the course of my 38-year career as an aerospace engineer, I have often solved aero-thermodynamic problems. I have applied thermodynamcs/heat-transfer principles to create predictive dynamic models of engineering systems. During the 6-years that I have tutored on this and other platform, I have tutored numerous students in thermodynamics under the subject discipline of "Mechanical Engineering".

Thermodynamics Savior

Jim went over my quizzes from thermodynamics and helped me review Ch 1-3 before my first midterm. He was knowledgeable and able to make the problems simpler to understand. I did great on the exam thanks to his help.

Thorough and knowledgeable

Jim was a great help. I am a mechanical engineering student and Jim was able to help me better understand my homework assignment. He spend a lot of time with me and made sure I understood that material. I highly recommend him

AMAZING TUTOR!

Jim is an AMAZING tutor! He helped me throughout my "Vibrations and Controls" class, which is the hardest class that mechanical engineering students at my university need to take. He broke down complex concepts and explained them in a way that made it easy to understand. Our classes were engaging and he provided real-life examples of what I was learning, which made it feel more relevant. We worked through many problems that progressively got harder, but Jim did a great job at explaining them and guiding me to work through them. He helped me with my homework assignments and I got all "A's" on them, and was then able to review the thorough notes from our lessons to practice some problems on my own and further prepare for my exams. I highly recommend Jim! He is intelligent and a great teacher that cares about his students. 10/10 tutor!
