I have an M.Ed in English & 30 years experience in the classroom, small group, and 1:1. I was a Kindergarten teacher for 10 yrs, a college professor (English and Communications) for 8, and since 2020 I've been a certified mindfulness meditation, yoga, and mind-body fitness instructor for all ages. I'm a lifelong educator and also a parent-- I specialize in Struggle.

I'm a writer, speaker, artist, gardener & neurodivergent person, and I love working with all types of brains, just like yours.

My methods are fueled by compassionate communication backed by current findings in neuroscience and education. We cast a wide tutoring net, using a variety of nurturing multi-sensory methods, games, simulations & experiments--woven with the pop culture, music, and real-world props drawn from *your* interests.

I struggled for decades, mostly on my own, trying to customize (okay, hack) every school situation I met, to meet my actual needs as a learner. I struggled to focus, pay attention, read, process, understand & know what I was actually being asked to do *next* --much less retain. Since 2020 students are more reluctant and unsteady. Less engaged, more anxious, less likely to try. More nervous. Less confident. More bored. Less likely to see they have tools--to find & use them.

Wherever your struggly part starts, that's where we'll start.

Whatever you care about, in & out of school, we can use to help you customize your own shine. To make it easier to tackle what you must do, by applying elements of what you love to do. We take whatever's on your current plate: interests, quirks, squirms, temperament and use best practices to help build out your toolbox. Customizing individual struggles into greater strengths--in the classroom & beyond--is an art form you can learn!

I have taught Writing about Literature (ENGL 102), Introduction to College Writing (ENGL 101), Developmental Reading (RDG 099), and Introduction to Public Speaking (COMM 105) at the community college-level for 8+ years. I worked closely with our ADA and Student Success office, and my courses were frequently requested by and suggested to those students needing extra support and individualized instruction tailored for Neurodivergent learners, with whom I have a natural rapport, deep respect, and long experience. Teaching Kindergarteners (10 years) and college freshmen and sophomores (8 years+), I use Neurodivergent classroom strategies, and have years of professional and personal experience with ADHD and Autism. I also taught the Kindergarten-2nd grade class in a State school (and at the time, respite hospital) for those with severe learning and social disabilities, and emotional disturbance. My teaching style (in all content areas) is warm, inclusive, multi-sensory, journey- and strengths-based, and rooted in individual human potential.

Almost all students (and their families) were working with neurodivergence in the form of higher-functioning autism with the ability to verbalize. My teaching style (in all content areas) is warm, inclusive, multi-sensory, journey- and strengths-based, and rooted in individual human potential.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I have taught Creative Writing and facilitated Writing Workshops with students at many educational levels since 1994. Creative Writing and Education was the secondary focus of my B.A. in Literature, and also of my Master's Degree in Education in English. I particularly love introducing students to the art of Reflective Writing--the tools of self-inquiry and reflection, as well as applied critical thinking, are in very scant supply in our world (as is responsibility-taking for our thoughts, feelings, and actions/fruits of our creation). We practice Contemplative Writing, as well as the craft of Creative Non-fiction (essays, memoir), as the basis for understanding texts-in-the-real-world, advertising and environmental print, as well as Fiction Writing--Short Fiction and Poetry/Song Lyrics. I am a memoirist, short story writer, and poet.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

My first teaching positions were in Independent school classrooms, in the Lower and Primary divisions. Most of my 10 years in K-6 were as Head Teacher of a Kindergarten classroom, bookended by Pre-primary (Pre-K) and 1st and 2nd Grade teaching positions. I have experience teaching and privately tutoring Reading and Writing at these levels, as well as helping to develop and teach in Summer Writing Programs for inner city youth. I have been at the helm of my own Kindergarten classroom(s), and I have also team-taught 2nd grade.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I am a career educator and writing teacher. I have over 8 years teaching college-level essay writing, literature, and communications as an adjunct professor, and 10 years teaching K-6. I've consistently held process-writing workshops for all students-- because I believe *everybody* can learn to write an essay from stem to stern using a stratified, modular approach aligned with the student as an individual--exactly where they are at this time: developmentally, socially, and situationally. Learning to articulate more clearly, more simply, and with more confidence (maybe even some polish!) serves us everywhere in life, in the classroom, in the workforce, and in all interpersonal relationships. Through a deepening, and gradual, process of applied critical thinking, self-reflection, and evidence-gathering/research skills we move into our own confident and competent expression. We can find our individual expression and a successful writing experience within whatever is assigned, or required of us. Audience, Purpose, and Occasion for Every Occasion. And let's make it pleasant. Let's make it yours.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I teach college-level Reading and Writing, as well as SAT prep.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I have been teaching writing for over 30 years, with students at all levels. All is thesis-driven: I've taught Writing Workshop K-12, and Thesis Writing, specifically, in College Writing and Rhetoric (English 101 and 102) for over 8 years. The backbone of written expression (and all communication) is in demystifying, then discovering, polishing, and supporting your Thesis.
