Dear students and families,

I am a special education teacher, which means I teach ALL learners. I adapt and meet students at their functioning level. I set goals with students (and families), and I work hard to get student buy-in by monitoring progress and celebrating achievement.

As a former emergency manager/planner, I come prepared to lessons for all contingencies. I have a dual Masters in Elementary Education (1st-6th) and in Special Education for Mild to Moderate Disabilities (preK-8th). I work with students as young as 4 years old, coach parents, teach students with IEPs up to high school, college students, and adults. I have homeschooled my own child and love to support homeschool families, particularly those with children with learning differences. I enjoy teaching students how to read. I am serious about instruction, but I also like to be joyful and find ways to smile in lessons.

I am trained in the Wilson Reading System, an evidence-based and proven phonics reading intervention for individuals that cannot read or struggle. Wilson is based on the Orton-Gillingham structured literacy approach, also known as the science of reading.

I utilize TouchMath, a kinesthetic method for teaching early elementary math skills, or what I call structured numeracy.

My tutoring philosophy starts with teaching my students what it means to have a growth mindset. I believe in encouraging students to learn from their mistakes and the mistakes of others. Like Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus says, the best students take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.

I hope you choose me to partner with your family to help your student reach academic goals!

Best,
Elisabeth

I have experience teaching English as a second and foreign language. I taught in a private English language immersion school in South Korea for 6 months. I also have experience teaching English to students as a second language in elementary schools in the United States. Additionally, I am an experienced conversation partner for young students and adults learning English as a foreign language. I have designed and executed different experiential learning opportunities so speakers can practice their English language skills in real world settings and through real world experiences. I believe the best approach to learning English is to find a subject or topic a student is PASSIONATE about, then study and learn the vocabulary and mechanics to intelligently communicate and discuss the passion. I am certified to teach English as a foreign or second language. I have earned a TEFL Diploma with a Grammar Advisor Endorsement from BridgeTEFL provided by Bridge Linguatec, Inc.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught 1st-6th graders as a general education teacher and special education teacher at local Washington, DC public charter schools. I teach all subjects. I earned a dual Masters in Elementary Education and Special Education. I also worked as an English Teacher in a private school for six months in Korea. I instructed students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade at all English levels (low beginning to advanced); implementing a complete American curriculum that employed American textbooks and American standards of learning based on grade levels. I also have experience teaching 5th, 6th, and 7th grade science and math. I tutored middle school students in an intense year-around, multi-year educational program in Washington, DC called Higher Achievement. During the After-School Academy I supervised and managed a disciplined study hall of approximately 20 scholars (5th-6th grade) that had scholars actively working on homework and supplemental work to help scholars prepare for upcoming assessments, improve academic grades, and increase their knowledge in all subject matter. I answered questions one-on-one and re-taught necessary concepts to scholars to achieve mastery of coursework. I ensured all homework and supplemental work was completed accurately. I prepared individual-specific supplemental work for all scholars on academic probation, tailoring activities to each scholar’s academic needs.
Homeschool,

Homeschool

I am a trained elementary and special educator. I have worked in urban schools for over 10 years with a variety of age groups (from 1st grade to adults) that helps me understand the spectrum of learners I would support in an homeschool environment. I am comfortable partnering and communicating with parents when meeting their goals for their children's growth. I also homeschool my own daughter (in addition to her attending a prekindergarten program and public school), we have daily "homeschool" goals and work we do at home. During the height of the pandemic, she was homeschooled for her kindergarten year. I have experience with a few of the homeschool curricula, but prefer those evidence-based curricula designed for teachers and can support family implementation of a homeschool program, particularly families with students with disabilities that were unable to get their needs met in the public schools.
