Hello, my name is Elana. I graduated with a Bachelor's in History and a Master's in Teaching (secondary education). As a student, I recognized that understanding how I best remember and recall information (metacognition) was key to me becoming a better student, parent, and teacher. As a parent and teacher, I’ve watched my children and students prosper personally and academically as they become aware of how they learn and create a toolbox of skills to help guide them through various life scenarios as they grow. This is the comfort I wish to bring to your family, creating a child who is clear, confident, and capable of moving forward as they set goals.

I was in the classroom for 10 years as a social studies teacher in both middle and high school and have been tutoring for over 20+ years in mathematics, reading, and writing. I also homeschooled my two youngest children creating a curriculum that was specific to their strengths and weaknesses. My educational philosophy is that a child’s growth is like a three-legged stool in which each leg represents the child, the parent(s), and the teacher. Our goal as a group is to act as a balance of support to reinforce personal responsibility, critical thinking, and effective communication skills so that our children can engage positively both in and outside of the classroom.

As your tutor, the joy that is experienced when a child begins to master a difficult skill is exhilarating because it builds confidence and creates useful tools for him/her to accomplish the next goal. I want to bring that same feeling of confidence and excitement to your child and your family and make life a little easier.
