About Quante

I'm Quante. You're welcome to call me Mr. Q! I graduated from University of Maryland, Baltimore County, as a Meyerhoff Scholar with a Bachelors of Biological Sciences degree. I worked hard through grade school to earn a full academic scholarship to college. Incredibly dedicated educators and coaches guided me, preparing me to learn how to teach myself and others. For years, I lived with my grandmother while she taught in grade school. Outside of class, she challenged me with word search puzzles, crossword puzzles, Pictionary and Scrabble. While she would complete daily lesson plans--and read 1000-page novels within days--I would read through dictionaries and encyclopedias. Preparing for the games and playing greatly increased my appetite for learning. With her passion for educating and her hands-on teaching style, it was Grandma who first inspired me to teach.

My first tutoring experience was during 6th grade, tutoring 3rd-graders in math and reading. That 3rd grade teacher became one of numerous personal coaches whom I admire and imitate to this day because of the way they engage their pupils and seek to empower them from day 1. Over the years, I've helped fellow high school and college classmates with their studies, getting help for myself from tutors when needed. On hiatus from graduate school, I assisted in teaching high school math, music and Spanish. In the classroom, I liked to use a peer-to-peer approach, yet I never hesitated to do one-on-one teaching. When tutoring, I aim to tie student interests to the learning objectives so they appear more useful and enjoyable--finding resourceful websites, involving family in building skills or other methods.

I recently returned to tutoring with a focus on algebra earlier this year, and I'm currently brushing up on my Spanish while learning French--basically competing against myself to eventually speak three or more languages. And that type of spirit is what I like: having the will to dig in, fight to achieve goals and make the cut, getting better day by day, even if it takes extra help. I want to benefit the students I work with as much as possible, so I also welcome any resources or suggestions students or parents can provide. I am easy to reach and will always respond quickly. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson!

Sincerely,

"Mr. Q"

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Most recently, I was tutoring freshman level algebra to prepare a struggling student for PARC testing. Academically, we were gaining ground, and in light of their personal hurdles, we were also turning corners. Algebra was never a subject I've struggled to comprehend or explain, especially if students had a fairly solid arithmetic base.
