I love to teach. My experience includes teaching and mentoring such diverse subjects as introductory accounting at the college level, tax and estate planning for personal financial planners, college Biology lab instructor, Tae Kwon Do, and swing dancing. I am also a screenwriter, playwright and lyricist and would love to help you with your scripts.

My strength is being able to quickly and accurately dissect complex situations, present analyses and solutions in a way that all audiences can understand and act upon. The breadth of my experience makes me aware of the marketing and organizational implications of my research as well as the technical accounting and tax issues involved. And having taught three teenage daughters how to drive, I've learned a lot about patience.

I am a CPA with an MBA in Taxation. I have broad industry experience "telling a story with numbers" - and discerning the story behind the numbers, in public practice as a CPA, as Controller of a real estate development company, doing corporate financial and strategic planning and as a litigation support analyst.

I've had to communicate many complex tax, financial and business analyses to all manner of audiences in a way that non-specialists can understand and act upon.

My business experience was gained as a CPA in public practice, a real estate syndicator, controller of a real estate development corporation, as a strategic planner for real estate services firms, a litigation support expert, and as a private consultant.

My teaching philosophy is straightforward – it is not my job to impress students with my knowledge, but to enhance theirs. To me, this is best done through the use of plain language, analogies and – when appropriate – humor. This is not to say that I view teaching is a “game”, but to a way to keep students engaged and receptive.

Business

I'm a CPA with decades of experience helping individuals and businesses set and meet goals. I love to teach and make a point of avoiding jargon. My strength is teaching complex subjects - simply. I spent a career doing financial analysis, strategic planning, and due diligence in industry and commercial real estate.
Tax Accounting

Tax Accounting

As a Big Eight CPA Firm Tax professional, I supervised and reviewed work of staff accountants in preparation of complex business and personal income tax returns; saved one client $1.2 million by demonstrating that a consolidated corporation tax regulation did not comply with the Administrative Procedures Act. In 2019, I have been working as a tax preparer and reviewer for a local CPA firm in the DC area. I prepared and reviewed individual income tax returns for clients in eleven states and the District of Columbia using Intuit Pro18 Software. A substantial number of clients file complex multi-state returns, including Schedules C and E. I researched §199A QBID safe harbor regulations, new “luxury” auto tax regulations, military spouse residence rules, Foreign Earned Income Exclusion requirements and Expat filing status rules.

Very helpful

I’m writing a screenplay for the first time, and John really helped me get started with the correct formatting. He also helped with other hurdles I had. His help and advice was very valuable.

Highly professional and patient

John helped me to understand a complex tax matter, he was willing to go above and beyond. I am very happy. He will also be tutoring me to challenge the IRS Enrolled Agent Exam Part I.

Well Prepared and Thoughtful

I worked with John on a tutoring session that pulled various bits of real estate, financial and investing content together. John did a masterful job of organizing the materials ahead of time and then presented it for my 1-1 in a very streamlined and well laid out fashion so that our time was well spent. John knows his material and has a nice blend of subject mastery while also listening to questions. I plan to use John for another session and would recommend him to others.

Very knowledgeable & prompt in answering any questions regarding topics covered

John has through knowledge about the concepts. He skims the topic in simple form for better understanding. I am little old school so John wrote everything on paper and cleared confusion about various topics. In person tutoring is better than online for sure. Also importantly he has in-depth tax knowledge.
