As a teacher in a traditional classroom setting, we do not always have the opportunity in the instructional day to help all students access curriculum. When a student is struggling it is usually a sign that a foundational skill should be further developed. This can also be a sign that the students learning style is not being accommodated in the classroom. No matter what the circumstance, my commitment is to ensure access to academic content at the student's pace and learning style. As an intervention specialist, I have the skills to support the unique needs of all learners. I have found that students without special needs also benefit tremendously from working with an intervention specialist.
I graduated with honors from Towson University in Towson, MD with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. Since then, I have been a social worker helping adults with disabilities find and keep employment. I use this experience to help parents and students obtain the life skills required beyond the classroom. I changed my career very quickly and became an educator because of the power educators have to transform a person's life. I currently have my Master of Science in Education from Johns Hopkins University with an area of focus in elementary education.
I am a certified Pre-K-12 Special Education teacher and Intervention Specialist. I have worked with students ranging from ages 5-14. My first year as an educator was spent in a self-contained classroom with students ranging from 10-14 years old. This was a classroom for students with Mild-to Moderate disabilities. I supported students with ID, ED, SLD, OHI, Autism and MD. The following year, I worked as an Intervention Specialist for Kindergarten through second grade. I co-taught reading in a Kindergarten classroom and supported all grades in the inclusion setting to meet Individual Educational Plan goals and access general education curriculum.
