I am a skilled tutor who has worked as a professional writer, a graduate level Teacher's Assistant, and a college Writing Mentor for students with learning disabilities. I am also a certified yoga instructor (RYT 500) trained in the therapeutic application of yoga, which can ease students’ symptoms of anxiety, depression and chronic low back pain (complementary to conventional treatment).

I earned a Master's degree from a top-10 school of International Relations (3.87 GPA) and a Bachelor's in Politics (3.75 GPA, summa cum laude) from a liberal arts college ranked #34 out of 200 in best undergrad education, U.S. News and World Report, 2024. I also have extensive experience coaching adults on professional nonprofit writing and in writing marketing material in the healthcare sector.

At American University’s Academic Support and Access Center, I provided individual writing instruction (essays, research papers) to freshmen with learning disabilities and ADHD, and to ESOL students, coaching them on time management, reading comprehension and study skills.

Writing tutoring is one of my greatest strengths. My subject matter knowledge is strongest in Government/Politics/International Relations, Spanish and English.

I work with students to tailor the tutoring experience to meet individual needs, creating a plan that may involve outside "homework" to reinforce lessons.

I charge half my rate for sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, and my full rate if sessions are cancelled with less than 2 hours’ notice. After two last-minute cancellations, I charge the full rate. Individual exceptions may be made. For late arrivals, I charge students for the full agreed-upon time. I offer discounts for group lessons. I will provide last-minute paper writing assistance to students with at least an outline (preferably a rough draft).

I am not a medical professional. Therapeutic yoga is not intended to diagnose or treat disease.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

As a former Writing Mentor and Writing Lab Counselor at American University, I enabled college freshmen with learning disabilities and AD(H)D to master the expectations of college by: --Providing individual writing instruction and tutoring --Guiding students through the process of writing essays, research papers and other written assignments --Coaching students on time management, reading comprehension and study skills
English

English

As an English minor in college, I earned excellent grades in six English courses. I am also a professional writer who worked as a Teacher's Assistant in grad school, which involved helping students to improve their writing skills. I have experience assisting writers at a wide range of skill levels, including immigrants and other individuals with limited English proficiency.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Politics and a Master's degree from American University's School of International Service (in the top ten for International Relations). As a graduate student I worked as a Teacher's Assistant for courses including a World Politics freshman seminar, which involved grading papers and exams and meeting with students on their research projects. I have also worked for various nonprofits that focus on advocacy for government policy change.
Literature

Literature

I minored in English as an undergraduate, which gave me a strong base of knowledge in English literature. The types of literature I know best include Renaissance literature (especially 17th century poetry), 19th century American writers (especially transcendentalists like Emerson and Thoreau) and Victorian novels (especially social commentary).
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a Teacher's Assistant in graduate school, I graded papers and exams for a freshman seminar course, which involved correcting errors and suggesting changes to make to improve the quality of writing. For the majority of my career I have written, edited and proofread grant proposals and reports for nonprofit organizations. I have a keen eye for detail and I enjoy trimming out the fat in sentences!
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I scored a 720 out of 800 on the Verbal section of the SAT, before the Writing section was separated from Critical Reading (the combined "Verbal" section used to encompass all reading and writing questions and used a different scoring system). I can substantially improve students' reading comprehension, proofreading and timed essay writing skills using techniques recommended by the College Board, the makers of the SAT Test, combined with techniques I have developed through my own experience as a tutor and a Teacher's Assistant for college freshman courses.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

I have worked as a professional writer and I also have experience helping students to improve their writing skills as a Teacher's Assistant (while in graduate school) and Writing Mentor. I am accustomed to assisting students with varying levels of writing experience and skills, including ESOL and students with learning disabilities. I scored a 720 out of 800 on the Verbal section of the SAT before the Writing section was separated from Reading.
Spanish

Spanish

I developed advanced proficiency in Spanish while living in South America for a year and a half (2010 to 2011). In 2008, I participated in a language immersion program in El Salvador and I conducted Spanish-language interviews as part of my research for a Master's thesis in 2009. From 2005 to 2007 I worked with immigrants from various countries in Latin America. As a student, I took a combined 7 years of Spanish courses.
Study Skills

Study Skills

My expertise in this area comes both from my own personal success as a top-performing student (3.75 undergraduate GPA and 3.78 graduate GPA) and my work at American University's Academic Support and Access Center to help students learn more effective study skills. I can assist students to develop better organizational and time management skills as well as learn to plan overwhelming homework assignments in advance (breaking big assignments down into small pieces with self-imposed "due dates"). I am also familiar with strategies to track and prioritize assignments, resist procrastination and overcome test or paper-writing anxiety for students dealing with ADHD.
Writing

Writing

My background working with writers at a wide range of skill-levels has given me the experience necessary to deliver lessons that are responsive to students' unique needs, including to students with limited English proficiency or learning disabilities. As a Teacher's Assistant for freshman college courses in graduate school I learned to provide concrete feedback on short assignments, assess longer essays according to a grading rubric, and advise students on research papers. I am also skilled at demonstrating effective techniques for saving time and improving performance on timed essay tests. As a tutor, I draw heavily upon my prior career as a professional writer and editor to help students plan and organize their writing more effectively, improve unwieldy sentences, and fix grammatical errors.
Yoga

Yoga

I completed a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training accredited by Yoga Alliance through Yoga District in 2021. I completed a 300 hour training focused on the therapeutic application of yoga in 2025. My particular strengths are in using yoga techniques to complement conventional treatment for chronic low back pain and to promote greater ease during times of stress. Note: I am not a medical professional. Therapeutic yoga has been found to offer relief for certain conditions in many studies, but it is not a replacement for conventional medical treatment.

SAT Reading Review

Caitrin provide good tips on approaching SAT reading. For example, Caitrin taught how to scheme the paragraph. This was the first lesson. We will leave more comments after subsequent lessons.

Excellent teacher--great interaction with my son

Caitrin worked well with my son helping him with his English--both reading and writing. She asked questions to engage him and assess where he was at. She worked with him on some assignments he was behind on. She was engaging and not condescending. My son actually asked for help on particular assignments--a great sign!

Very Helpful Tutor

I would highly recommend Caitrin as a tutor. My child received a 97% on an in-class essay after preparing with her.

Tutor responded:

I was so thrilled to hear how well your son did on his Spanish essay on the future tense. He had a pretty good grasp of the grammar rules, and primarily needed some assistance organizing his thoughts into a plan for what to write. Some practice with vocabulary was also beneficial so that he would remember it for test day. I would love to work with him again in the future!

Excellent Resource!

Caitrin has been an excellent resource for our high school daughter with improving her writing skills. Our daughter is a tough critic and doesn't suffer fools lightly. Caitrin has impressed her with her intelligence, while also offering concrete recommendations, structure and patience that have enabled our daughter to strengthen both her skills and her confidence. Caitrin is also a true professional, easy to get a hold of, responsive, reliable, and also flexible.

Excellent day today

Today Caitrin reviewed one more time my son's essay and vocabularies. She went over his mistakes and did some more practice.
