Hello. You may call me Dr. David and I would enjoy being your tutor in English reading, writing and speaking; Pure and Applied Mathematics, including Statistics; ACT, SAT and GRE Prep; or, Physics. In the last few years, I taught and tutored students in High School, College and Graduate School. My students find me pleasant, curious and caring.

My lessons are prepared, thoughtful, lively and fun. A calm environment without distractions is ideal. Usually, I meet with students in a local library, bookstore or at home.

Each student has his or her own style and I try to match it. The best way to learn a subject is to have it presented clearly, to study class notes carefully, and to do assigned work regularly. The key to advancement is comprehension of the concepts and practice doing assignments. As I make an effort to be a good listener and prepare in advance for each lesson, if you are devoted to doing the required work we can build towards a successful outcome.

Biostatistics

Biostatistics

Descriptive and inferential statistics both apply to biostatistics. The former characterizes a population, often on the basis of samples. The latter involves examination of data for hypothesis testing, estimation, discovering correlations and other relationships. In college and graduate school I studies probability and statistics as part of the standard curriculum in physics and mathematics. At work, I have used and continue to use statistics in the engineering projects I work on. The areas I have specialized in are probability distributions, conditional probability, sampling, regression, confidence levels, analysis of outliers and hypothesis testing.
Calculus

Calculus

I am a Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at UMUC, including Calculus.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

In college and graduate school I studied the classical treatement of ordinary and partial differential equations, including • Newton's 2nd Law • Radioactive decay • Heat Equation • Wave Equation • Maxwell's equations • Laplace's equation • Poisson's equation • Einstein's field equation • Schrödinger equation • geodesic equation • Navier-Stokes equations • Cauchy-Riemann equations • Poisson-Boltzmann equation • Elliptic Equations • Grad-Shafranov Equation The most extensive application I made in the work world was for the determination and prediction of the orbital dynamics of NASA Scientific satellites. Nature is amenable to precise modeling by differential equations. The analysis of differential equations is both a beautiful subject just for the mathematics "of it" and a useful one for describing natural events.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

In college and graduate school I studied linear algebra and probability theory extensively. At that time, I did not realize that in the working world the main application of Discrete Mathematics I would utilize was algorithms for computers. Probability theory is a close second. Logic, set theory, combinatorics, graph theory, information theory and computational geometry were all subjects that I developed a working knowledge of while on the job. Of them all, I enjoy set theory the most, perhaps because it requires deep thought. Of them all, I find matrix algebra (of linear algebra) the most useful since it is turns up in a wide assortment of engineering applications.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

In both Physics and Mathematics courses in College and Graduate School I have studied and applied results from Linear Algebra. In my current work in imaging I regularly refer to fundamentals from Linear Algebra and apply both concepts and theorems. In addition, I have experience as a tutor for College students in this subject.
MATLAB

MATLAB

Matlab is ideal for projects involving data as well as for general science and engineering computation. Matlab has been the main software development system I have used for nine years in projects in engineering and physics. The special areas I have worked on include modeling and simulation, statistics, and data analysis.
Physics

Physics

In college and graduate school I studied theoretical physics and mathematics extensively. Along with my career in Scientific and Engineering Research and Development I have taught many High School, College and Graduate Students. Devoted to determining the special needs of each student and seeing that he or she is well prepared.
Statistics

Statistics

Both in College and at work, I have used statistics extensively. Students I have taught in statistics have ranged from High School AP through Graduate School. The concepts are typically simple but applications can be involved. In my teaching, I emphasize patiently thinking through a problem.

Patient, Knowledgeable and pushes you to think

Dr. Elkin planned the lesson ahead, and helped guide me through the unit very patiently. He is very knowledgeable and makes sures the student learned instead of just relaying the solution to them.

Knowledgeable, Patient, & Caring

Dr David helped my daughter understand and solve very complex problems in Probability and Statistics that involved Calc II. We actually tried 5 or 6 tutors before without any success. We will definitely continue using his service.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Excellent tutor! He is very knowledgable and has an amazing ability to explain complex topics. Very lucky to have found Dr. Elkin. I have no doubt my son will learn and thrive in statistics on continuing to work with Dr. Elkin.

Knowledgeable and understanding

Dr. David was well prepared. It was very helpful for my son. I am very thankful to him. We have tried few other tutor before we schedule with Dr. David. Finally it was worth it. We are looking forward to make appointment with him again.

Knowledgeable, capable, responsible tutor

Dr. David helped my daughter to understand and present a topic in discrete math. He used time to prepare before the class. During the class, he was able to explain a new/complicated concept clearly. He was extremely knowledgeable, I highly recommend him.

The patient tutor

He reviewed the geometric topics including reflection and refraction, mirrors, lenses, double-slits, diffraction, thin-film for my exam. We also practiced some physics problems together.

Physics

David met with my daughter who is a freshman in college. He reviewed concepts taught in her physics class and supplied her with additional practice problem sets. She felt comfortable with him and more confident after the session.

Great tutor

Dr. Dave is motivational and enthusiastic. He really wants his students to succeed; it was a pleasure working with him. He goes above and beyond to ensure that the subject is mastered and completed. I would recommend his tutoring and editing to anyone I know.

Highly recommended.

What a special person. In only a couple sessions "Dr. David" both inspired and calmed my son, and provided very specific strategies to help him based on what he had learned about my son in the short time they worked together. Highly recommended.
