Hello, I’m Hyrum! I earned my bachelor's degree in history at Brigham Young University and my master’s in history with honors at George Mason University. Hello, I’m Hyrum! I earned my bachelor's degree in history at Brigham Young University and my master’s in history with honors at George Mason University. I also have 2 semesters of experience working as a history TA. I believe strongly that history should be taught as any story should; it should be engaging and interesting. At times, it is easy to look at the people of the past and laugh or deride. I believe it is better to seek to understand them. In the process, I can make history interesting to just about anyone. In my master’s program, I focused on early modern England and early America. I also have a broad knowledge base of European, American, and Latin American history, and I am able to tutor in world history.
Additionally, I am TEFL-certified, and I have almost a year of experience at an English school teaching adults of a variety of levels and ages. I love learning languages myself; in addition to being a native speaker of English, I am fluent in Portuguese and proficient in Spanish. My experiences learning languages while living in Brazil and Mexico have shown me firsthand what learning a language is really like, and I use those experiences when teaching others. I have an enthusiastic style and take great pleasure in explaining why English works the way it does. English may seem like a mess of contradictions, but it contains many hidden patterns. I can communicate these patterns easily to English learners of all ages.
I have experience teaching adults, children, and teens, including teens with behavioral needs. I have 1.5 years of experience working as a mentor at a residential treatment center for teenagers and a year educating high school students and undergraduates about financial literacy as a lead peer mentor at George Mason University. I am comfortable tutoring students with a diverse set of needs and goals.
I look forward to connecting with you! Please message me for a free 15-minute phone or Zoom consultation to explore whether my style would be a good fit for your goals.
