I've been teaching at various colleges for over a decade, helping students prepare for art-industry jobs in illustration, graphic design, animation, and games. I have a MFA degree in Painting and spent 15 years doing gallery shows, open studios, and selling paintings done in a variety of styles from abstract to realistic. For the past 8 years I have been focused on illustration, drawing, and storyboarding. Throughout that time, I've been teaching and developing new and more efficient ways to teach and learn about art.

I approach teaching and learning about art as a technical skill with the understanding that it's also an emotional journey. We get invested in our art and personally identify with it, and we need to develop the ability to put art out into the world in a way that others can connect with it too.

After studying with Will Weston, who designed the style of Avatar, the Last Airbender, he sparked my journey into simplifying and packaging the basic ideas of drawing into a method that's efficient and approachable to learn. I've spent years honing the way that I teaching drawing and painting so that every student experiences a series of small successes that add up over time, allowing people to reach their goals while having a stress-free learning experience.

Every lesson I teach helps build the skills necessary to improve fast and reach the level each person wants. I've worked with people who want a good AP 2-D Art score, who want to prep a portfolio for college, get an art-industry job, or just learn to sketch for fun.

I specialize in drawing, painting, and digital art, with the idea that as an artist, you want to be able to both draw from reference and imagination. From objects, to vehicles, to landscapes, to people, I teach a simple set of techniques with wide applications.

I look forward to working with you!

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I have been using Photoshop for decades, and heavily focusing on it for the past 8 years. I use photoshop for digital drawing, digital painting, photobashing, and storyboarding. To learn photoshop, we first decide how you want to use it. If you're interested in digital painting, we learn 4 main ways to set up digital paintings and study shape-based approaches to image-making. Some of these methods are based on traditional painting methods, and some are highly modern approaches. If you're interested in digital drawing, we learn both the techniques of drawing itself (which you can use on paper, too) and the ways we can take advantage of photoshop's tools to make the process faster or more reliable. If you have an interest in photobashing, it will help to have learned some digital painting first. From there, we can explore the use of photos to add texture, shape, and a sense of heightened realism that would be extremely time consuming to create manually. If you're interested in storyboarding, we go into the shorthand drawing style needed, the tools of storytelling, and ways to use photoshop to tell a clear and concise visual story. If you're interested in comic books, we go into storytelling, layout, and composition and focus heavily on character drawing and environment drawing. We use photoshop both to draw and to create layouts for print or webcomic publishing.
Drawing

Drawing

I've taught drawing for over a decade at colleges and universities around the country Many of my students have gone on to work in animation, games, graphic design, and other industries. I approach drawing in a fun and stress-free way. We start wherever you're at--whether a total beginner or with years of experience. We set some goals and areas of interest and work together to get there as quickly and efficiently as possible. Maybe you want to sketch for pleasure, maybe you want to get a good AP exam score, or maybe you want to work professionally. I'll help you get where you want to go. I like to package information in easy-to-remember ways, using a set of simple techniques to draw anything and everything. We learn forms and objects, landscapes and plants, human figures and animals, and perspective and architecture. As you progress in your learning, you'll take on more advanced challenges within the areas that interest you the most.
Painting

Painting

I worked in Fine Art for over a decade making abstract, realistic, and surrealistic paintings, and I enjoy teaching people to paint some of their first successful paintings. If you're new to painting, we begin with simple shape-based notan exercises on a small scale, working for a week or two in black and white, then adding color using monochrome at first, then complementary color after. To get started, we begin with objects, architecture, or landscape, exploring the ways to begin a painting effectively. Once we can start strong, we develop a better sense of composition and layout on the canvas using a set of tools and techniques to develop a good focal point. From there, we go in the direction you prefer. If you want to paint portraits and figures, landscapes, or still life, we go into more detail for the specific needs of your discipline. If you want to go into abstraction, we can go in that direction as well. For more experienced painters, we work on tailored solutions to improve both content and execution--whether that's for abstraction, contemporary approaches, or more traditional ways of working.
