I have taught post-secondary writing and literature for over 30 years. While working on my Master’s in Modern American literature, I was a teaching assistant, tutor, and head GTA with responsibility for tutoring and tutor training. As a PhD student, I specialized in Victorian literature and was also a graduate assistant; as such, I had comprehensive training and practica in teaching college writing from Peter Elbow, widely recognized as the foremost expert in teaching college writing. As a TA at Stony Brook University, I taught my own composition courses.
In the last 30 years, I have taught at Virginia Tech, The University of Maryland, and, as tenured professor at Radford University, I trained graduate assistants to teach their own writing courses.
In my 23 years at Montgomery College, I have served as chairperson of my department and created a Writing in Disciplines program that trained faculty to use writing to support student learning. Faculty from Math, Art, Chemistry, Engineering, Accounting, and many others. Did just that. in the last 10 years, I directed a federally-funded Institute that worked to bring global perspectives to teaching. Faculty fellows successfully revised their curricula to include global learning in innovative ways.
My dedication to teaching writing has led me to read College Board essays for several summers and to tutor in the Writing Center at Montgomery College, which I still do. My commitment to teaching and supporting student writers have defined my professional life. I have worked with thousands of students, each one a distinct individual, with special focus on optimizing their strengths as writers to ensure their success.
I bring to my work with students a strong belief in their potential to succeed and an abiding commitment to helping them harness their strengths. Writing is a skill they will be called upon to utilize in their academic and professional lives, and they must build that muscle.—I look forward to working with your child.
