Unlike many tutors, I have BOTH a background in education AND real world experience. My students improve their grades, learn real world applications of the material, and gain learning and study skills that will help them for a lifetime.

I strive to be the most effective tutor on Wyzant in:
*Physics
*Math from Algebra through Calc and diff eqns
*Fluid Mechanics
*Thermodynamics
*Circuit Analysis
*OAR/NUPOC/ASVAB prep

I am currently a Master Instructor and Adjunct Professor at the Naval Academy. My teaching journey began as a learning skills counselor and Calculus/Physics tutor during my junior year at Pitt. Eventually I became a Chemistry teaching assistant and then continued as a Physics teaching assistant during graduate school. After joining the Navy and serving on a submarine, I taught at Navy Nuclear Power School where I obtained my certification as a Navy Master Training Specialist. I left active duty for the Navy Reserve and took on various science and engineering positions with Navy Nuclear Lab. One of my positions was as an instructor where I taught Math, Physics, and Electrical Engineering courses at the graduate level. I was selected for recall to active duty to teach at the Naval Academy where I taught courses in fluids, thermodynamics, and physics. In 2018 I won the Naval Academy Military Faculty Teaching Excellence Award which honors the best military instructor at the Naval Academy. I have presented at multiple teaching and learning conferences and I am a recognized expert in learning skills and STEM education.

I am a published researcher in nuclear engineering and I have worked professionally operating nuclear propulsion plants. I can connect the topics you are learning to real world science and engineering applications to make the material more concrete and meaningful to students.

Calculus

Calculus

I have 20+ years of STEM teaching experience and have spent 5 years as a faculty member in the US Naval Academy Mechanical Engineering Department. In 2018 I was recognized as the best rotational military instructor at the Naval Academy. I've tutored calculus since my time as an undergraduate. I've taught courses in vector calculus and taught fluids, thermodynamics, and physics classes that rely on calculus principles. I will not just teach you the math; I will give you tangible examples of where the math applies in the real world and your chosen field of study.
MCAT

MCAT

I taught MCAT preparation for the Princeton Review for 3 years (physical science and verbal sections in the old system). I have extensive experience teaching the chemistry and physics topics that show up on the MCAT. I am currently tutoring students in the Chemical and Physical Foundations section.
Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

I have 20+ years of STEM teaching experience and have spent 5 years as a faculty member in the US Naval Academy Mechanical Engineering Department. I've taught courses in fluids, thermodynamics, and nuclear reactor physics. In 2018 I was recognized as the best rotational military instructor at the Naval Academy.
Physics

Physics

My educational background is in Physics and I am currently the course director for the Naval Academy's Applied Nuclear Physics course. I have tutored studnets from intro physics through advance classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and electricity and magnetism.

Excellent engineering tutor

Matt tutored me in college thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, and I thought he was a great tutor. He really understands the material, and he helped me understand it as well. His teaching methods are super clear and in no way confusing, and he cares for his students. If he can’t figure something out within the lesson time, he often takes time outside of the lesson to solve it and let you know. Overall, amazing tutor, would highly recommend.

Knowledgeable, patient and reliable tutor.

Excellent! Student at Mines, tough engineering school, 2nd year DYNAMICS. Went to all the office hours, studied hard, but needed 1-on-1 time with Matt to prepare for tests, complete assignments, and receive 1-on-1 feedback. Great experience, will be using Matt going forward for challenging classes.

Knowledgable tutor

Matthew tutored me for my fluid mechanics class. Because this is a very hard engineering course, it’s hard to find tutors to help out. I was struggling a lot with the concepts and didn’t do well on my first exam. However, after a few sessions with Matthew, I received a new perspective on how to approach the problems through his expertise and patience and was able to do well on my next two exams and end up with an A in the class.

Only Reason I Passed

This man is literally the only reason I passed my college dynamics class. He was very patient during our sessions and extremely knowledgeable. He used new learning/teaching strategies that no tutor had introduced me to before. In addition to learning the subject, I re-learned how to LEARN. Furthermore he has a sense of humor which made our sessions both informative and entertaining. I am very grateful for mr. Matt for all his help and I give my full recommendation. From one college student to another: he is worth every dollar

Amazing tutor

Matthew took time to write a summary of the lesson's contents as well as the progress of my child. This was great in letting me understand what specifically my child needed more help on and the core focuses of the session. I am incredibly pleased with both my child's results and the experience during the session.

Hands down the best physics tutor on this site

I worked with Matt on college-level quantum mechanics and electrodynamics, and I genuinely feel in some part that I'll be graduating thanks to him :) First of all, Matt just knows his stuff. With a glance, he's able to solve questions I couldn't even start. He breaks down complex problems by asking leading questions to help YOU find the solution. I especially appreciate the fact that arriving at the right answer isn't the end - he really makes sure that you understand the context and big picture of these topics. He also provides detailed notes of each session, and on several occasions voluntarily reached out AFTER our lesson to expand on something we'd discussed. On top of this, Matt is always incredibly patient, warm, and encouraging. I've never felt uncomfortable saying "I still don't get this" because he is always happy to meet me at my level without judgement. Seriously, don't look any further, he's the best tutor you can hope to find!

Fluid Dynamics

Matthew was excellent for Fluids! He was always well-prepared and adjusted to my learning method fairly quickly. He is extremely knowledgeable in the subject and used tonnes of resources to help me better understand fluids! He was also super flexible and always had problems for me to review! Overall best tutor for Fluids!

Great teacher! Patient and useful

Currently struggling in one of my engineering classes, but with Matt’s help I seem to be catching up and understanding a lot more than I previously did! Thanks!
