Bio

Catherine is an expert, advanced level English/ESL teacher of over 10 years experience. She is also a cellist, writer, printmaker, jeweler, cartoonist and science fiction fan. She received her first degree, a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Music, from the University of Oregon in 1980, and in 2002 concluded a Teacher Training Program through Northwest Christian College and acquired licenses to teach ESL and middle school maths -in which she was rated Highly Qualified. Catherine is an expert, advanced level English/ESL teacher of over 10 years experience. She is also a cellist, writer, printmaker, jeweler, cartoonist and science fiction fan. She received her first degree, a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Music, from the University of Oregon in 1980, and in 2002 concluded a Teacher Training Program through Northwest Christian College and acquired licenses to teach ESL and middle school maths -in which she was rated Highly Qualified. After a year of substitute teaching in Hillsborough, she relocated to St Paul Island AK, where she taught math and music.

She returned to Oregon in 2004, but faced with poor economic prospects, relocated to Prague, in the Czech Republic, where she taught English from 2007-2015. Ms Chandler was born in Chicago and grew up near Washington DC. Having attended college in Oregon, she met and married David Chandler, an Oregon native, in 1981. She and her husband have lived in San Francisco, CA, Eugene, Florence and Portland, OR, Bloomington IN, and Bethesda MD, as well as in the Czech Republic. In her varied career she has worked as a foot messenger, a convenience store clerk an, office assistant and an outdoor educator, among other things. Catherine speaks Czech (a Slavic language, related to Russian and Polish) at an intermediate level, as well as a little bit of French and Italian. As an English teacher, her special skills are in advanced level grammar and writing.

I attended and completed a two year program for teacher training at Northwest Christian College during the years 1999 to 2002. In four of those six terms I earned a place on the Dean's List. The program included year long courses in Intercultural Communication, Reading Instruction and Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages. From 2007 to 2015 I taught English as a Second Language in Prague, in the Czech Republic. My students ranged in age from 7 years to adult and in skill level from complete beginners to advanced grammar, writing and English conversation. Letters of recommendation from my supervisors and students from that time can be provided upon request.

As a certified ESL/TESOL instructor with over 10 years experience, I have a solid understanding of English grammar and conventions. More importantly, I have a great deal of experience explaining many of the more difficult grammar features of English, and have many techniques for getting students to internalize these concepts and become comfortable integrating these concepts into their natural speech. It doesn't matter if you are a beginning English speaker still mastering basic question forms and negatives, or a more advanced students struggling with some of the more complex tenses: I can help you get it.

In 20013 I attended a workshop offered by the British Council, preparing English Teachers for the grammar and writing requirements in their tests. I have successfully tutored a number of students for the FCE (First Certificate of English) test, as well as the CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) and the CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English).

Catherine is everything you look for in a tutor!!

What can I say about Catherine? She is absolutely TERRIFIC! It's been more than six months, and working with her has been a pleasure. She has taught me so much in regard to English writing. She is knowledgeable, an amazing storyteller, and a super nice person to work with. I highly recommend her, but please DO NOT take my spot!!
