I have a BA in English from Bucknell University and an MA in English Language and Literature from University of Maryland, College Park. Recently, after years of teaching English in Japan, I decided to return to college to obtain another MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus.
Soon after getting my BA and while working on my first MA, I taught middle school and high school English at a small private school for 2 years. I have taught Developmental Writing, Developmental Reading, ESL Reading, ESL Writing, Freshman Composition, American Literature, and World Literature at the community college level. For 17 years, starting as an undergraduate peer tutor, I have been a writing tutor at the college level which is what I do full-time at present. In addition, I taught ESL in Japan for 16 years and am fluent in Japanese. I have taught beginner Japanese to a 7th grade student for a year.
I enjoy teaching and feel so rewarded when my students get the "lightbulb" moment of understanding. My students return to me often because they say they feel a good connection with me, I explain things well, and they can feel how much I care about them.
