About Brian

Bio

Hello, my name’s Brian. I love sharing my love of math, physics and computer programming with young students, especially those learning those subjects for the first time. I’ve been fortunate to have had inspiring teachers in some formative subjects, and I absolutely understand how a good experience in an introductory class can set the course of a future career. I had a great high school physics teacher and look what I ended up studying.

My experience: I taught undergraduate physics for a year before switching to a research career in computational biophysics (which is basically the intersection of math, physics, biology and computer programming). Throughout I’ve taken numerous tutoring gigs: 2 years at For Love Of Children (inner city tutoring - I had a smart first-grader); undergrad optics, chemistry and physics in individual and group settings at the University of Maryland (1 year); intro physics at MIT for two summers while TA’ing during the semesters; physics at the University of Washington; and calculus and physics at Bellevue Community College prior to teaching there. My degrees are in aerospace engineering and physics (undergrad) and I have a physics PhD as well.

Please drop a line if you’d like help! I can be available almost day.

C

C

I learned to code at the age of 8 and switched to C when I was around 16. That means I’ve been coding in C for almost 30 years! I’ve written some complex scientific codes and even a scripting language in C (https://github.com/heltilda/cicada) which is probably the best demo of my coding ability.
Calculus

Calculus

Calculus appears everywhere in physics (hey, it was invented for physics), so I used it constantly throughout my education. I’ve also worked with calculus throughout my research career in algorithm development: basically for every optimization problem I’ve ever encountered. For example, my graduate work used backpropagation, which is the common use of calculus to train AI models.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra was my best college math course, and I’ve used it extensively over my research career. For example, my latest publication described a new simulation method using a linear ‘change of basis’. Linear algebra forms the basis of quantum mechanics, and I found that my QM classes really brought the mathematics to life.
Physical Science

Physical Science

I’ve had a research career as a computational biophysicist, which means I have a lot of experience in both biology and physics, as well as math/computer science. My former self studied plasma plasma physics and engineering. I’ve always had broad research interests, so I keep up with developments throughout science via the large scientific publications (Nature, Science, etc).
Physics

Physics

I taught intro mechanics for four quarters at Bellevue Community College and two summers at MIT. Additionally, I had tutored mechanics and electricity & magnetism at Bellevue and the University of Washington, and TA’d those classes at MIT for 3 semesters. After leaving Bellevue I applied my physics knowledge towards a second career in computational biophysics.
