Hello! My name is Emily and I am a recent graduate (Bachelors of Arts) of the University of Chicago with a degree in Biology (specialization in Genetics) and Latin American studies, hoping to help you with your tutoring needs.
I have more than 5 years of teaching and tutoring experience, working with children as young as three years old to college-aged students. Some of my previous positions include working as a tutor for the inpatient pediatrics units at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, teaching 9th grade health in CPS high schools, and teaching an undergraduate biology laboratory course at the University of Chicago. I am certified as an undergraduate teaching assistant at the University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division and held multiple paid positions there between 2019 and 2022. Classes I taught included Introduction to Genetics, Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology, and Biological Inquiry (a summer course for high achieving high school students). In order to teach health in the Chicago Public Schools system, I was certified in health education training through Peer Health Exchange, trained as a mandated reporter, and underwent multiple background checks and youth training in order to work with 9th grade students in their classroom.
Because of my wide range of teaching experiences, sometimes in an unconventional teaching setting such as a hospital, I have become well-versed and confident in working with students of diverse needs and abilities. I am patient and caring, and will work diligently to develop a lesson plan and teaching strategy that fits each unique student's needs.
Although my passion is in the biological sciences (specifically Genetics), I am able to tutor a wide range of other elementary to high school subjects, such as math, reading, organizational skills, writing, or history.
