I love to read. Now, I also am passionate about teaching both children and adults skills which enable them to become more confident and proficient readers. I have been tutoring elementary and middle school students for over 7 years (including those with special needs) and also tutor adults through the Cecil College Adult Education Program.
I am trained in an Orton-Gillingham based method of reading through Reading ASSIST (RA) in Wilmington, Delaware. This is a multi-sensory approach to language education which helps to make the sound/letter connection. Their program is certified by IMSLEC (International Multisensory Structured Language Institute) and I am now a certified Reading Interventionist through RA.

My tutoring always starts with an assessment of phonemic awareness, grapheme knowledge (letters have sounds) and reading nonsense words. The results drive my individualized tutoring plan. Our work is direct, explicit, systematic and intense - but I'm an exuberant person so there is room for fun. My students look forward to earning spelling rewards (The Prize Box!) and playing word/sound games.

As student's progress in school, texts become more complex. Then tutoring might focus not just on the reading itself, but understanding the text and writing about what has been read: grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and making inferences.

The study of virtually every subject starts with reading: history, math, social studies, biology, engineering, nursing, auto mechanics, veterinary science...you get the idea. If you have the tools to decode and comprehend many different levels of text, your learning is more effective, more enjoyable, and will stay with you longer.

Literature

Literature

So many different books: fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, text books, graphic novels, picture books. . . Does a reader approach each book differently? If so, Why? How do you do it? By learning how to approach various types of text, a reader will get the most out of each book.
Phonics

Phonics

Readers have to start with phonemic awareness: letters make sounds. Then there is the magic of putting those sounds together to form words, and using words to make sentences. A multisensory approach works wonders; using many senses reinforces the learning. Instruction is individualized, explicit, direct, systematic and cumulative.
Reading

Reading

I was trained in an Orton-Gillingham based multisensory reading program. This type of direct and explicit teaching solidifies the connection between the sound a letter makes and it's written form. Everyone learns differently and at varying speeds and so my tutoring is also highly individualized.
Spelling

Spelling

Understanding how to READ certain letter combinations is great for reading. Sometimes, it is more difficult to learn how to spell them and have to deal with various spelling rules. Once students have learned letter sounds and combinations, they use a Simultaneous Oral Spelling routine to help them spell those sounds and learn spelling rules.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

English is from all over! It has words from Anglo Saxon, Greek, Latin, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese . . . the list goes on. Reading many different types of text helps students build vocabulary. To increase it even more, learn about suffixes, prefixes and word origins.
Writing

Writing

Do you proof read your emails? Your texts? Your school work? Can you put together a paragraph? An essay? A research paper? If your first introduction to someone is something you've written, you certainly want it to be properly formatted with correct grammar and spelling. This is a skill like any other: learn the basics then PRACTICE!
