Hi! I’m Penelope, and I graduated from UMBC in 2023 with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Environmental Science. During college, I tutored for two years at our Academic Center, both online and in-person, helping students one-on-one and in small groups. This experience not only honed my ability to adapt to individual learning styles but also reinforced my commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment. My own academic journey, which included a high school GPA of 4.28 and a college GPA of 3.43, inspires me to help students overcome challenges in subjects like algebra, calculus, and physics.

Since graduating, I’ve been tutoring online for a year and have worked with around 60 students across 8 subjects, primarily in high school and college. I've always been most excited about taking and teaching STEM classes; they have a reputation for being really difficult, and I love being able to break down concepts into bite-sized components that are easier to think about.

This experience is reflected in my tutoring philosophy, which emphasizes deep understanding rather than short-term memorization. I find that when students are able to grasp the "hows" and "whys" behind complex topics, they are able to apply their knowledge much more easily. For instance, in preparing students for the ACT and SAT—where I achieved a 31 and a superscore of 1440, respectively—I focus on strategies that enhance critical thinking and adaptability. I often present questions in multiple ways to help students see different contexts and think about what the questions are asking and how to problem-solve around new or missing information, which empowers students to adapt when their first idea doesn't work.

Throughout all sessions, I prioritize a collaborative atmosphere where students feel comfortable exploring and growing their understanding. If you’d like to schedule a session or have any questions about my approach, please feel free to reach out!

ACT English

ACT English

- Working with and teaching complex topics, like uncommon punctuation usage and separating subjects and objects. - Focus on enhancing both speed and accuracy in answering questions. - Personal ACT English score of 31 I provide comprehensive tutoring for the ACT English section, focusing on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. My approach emphasizes practice and comprehension, helping students identify patterns in questions to improve both their accuracy and speed. I often encourage students to answer questions before looking at the answer choices to make them more confident and more aware of their own expertise. Specifically covering the most commonly forgotten material, like how to use semicolons and dashes, and the most commonly missed sections, like improper verb forms and subject-verb agreement, I help students learn how to identify and work through the few questions they’ll be really stumped on. Having scored a 31 on the ACT English section in high school, I bring a deep understanding of the test’s question styles and key components. I’ve received lots of positive feedback both on my teaching strategies and style, and on the improvement shown in my student’s exam scores.

ACT Reading

ACT Reading

- Specialize in improving reading comprehension and identifying evidence for the ACT Reading passages. - Focus on both speed and understanding to help students navigate passages efficiently. - Achieved a personal ACT Reading score of 34. For the ACT Reading section, I help students enhance their reading comprehension skills through a focus on identifying main ideas, themes, and the author’s intent. Through targeted practice and in-depth discussions of each passage, I make sure students can confidently handle all types of reading passages on the test. My approach emphasizes strategic reading: students learn how to actively engage with each passage and quickly identify information. Finding text-support is absolutely critical for choosing the right answer in the Reading section, so I make sure it’s a heavily practiced skill for students. I also specifically work with students to be able to comprehend scientific, legal, and poetic texts, and not just narratives. With an ACT Reading score of 34 in high school, I help students master the required skills to be able to answer questions with confidence. I’ve received lots of positive feedback both on my teaching strategies and style, and on the improvement shown in my student’s exam scores.
ACT Science

ACT Science

- Guide students through interpreting data and analyzing scientific experiments on the ACT Science section. - Help students improve their ability to read graphs, charts, and hypotheses effectively. - Achieved a personal ACT Science score of 28. As a tutor with lots of experience with ACT Science material, I help students navigate complex scientific data and interpret graphs, tables, and experimental setups. I focus on teaching students to read scientific passages and data efficiently to be able to identify relevant information. My approach focuses on the two most common types of questions: successive trials and unknown processes. The goal for successive trials is to keep the data clearly organized and know how the different variables change over time. With unknown processes, the goal is to keep students from shutting down when they see a mechanism they don’t understand. With more than 3 years tutoring STEM subjects, I ensure that students can handle all scientific topics, including ones they’ve never seen before. Though Science was my weakest ACT section in high school with a score of 28, in college I majored in Environmental Science, ran numerous labs with professors, and handled huge volumes of data regularly. I’ve also spent a lot of time becoming familiar with the patterns and pitfalls of the ACT Science section, and I am confident that I can give students the knowledge they need to succeed with it. I’ve received lots of positive feedback both on my teaching strategies and style, and on the improvement shown in my student’s exam scores.
Algebra 1
