I am a Ph.D. mathematician with more than 20 years of professional experience in cybersecurity and technical leadership. My academic background in mathematics, combined with a long career working in highly technical environments, allows me to tutor a wide range of college-level subjects, including calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, algorithms, programming, and cybersecurity.

My formal teaching includes both in-class room as well as one-on-one tutoring/mentoring. In particular, mentoring and one-on-one instruction have been central parts of my career. I spent many years working closely with junior mathematicians, engineers, analysts, and technical staff. I helped them develop mathematical intuition, understand complex systems, and strengthen their analytical and problem-solving skills. This mentoring was typically done in individualized settings, working through difficult concepts step-by-step and adapting explanations to the learner’s background.

My approach to tutoring emphasizes clarity, structure, and deep understanding. I focus on breaking difficult ideas into manageable pieces, guiding students through problem-solving strategies, and helping them build the confidence needed to succeed in technical subjects.

Now semi-retired, I enjoy continuing this kind of individualized teaching by working with college and advanced high-school students who want to strengthen their understanding of mathematics, computer science, or cybersecurity.

Discrete Math

I currently tutor a college student in a discrete mathematics course, helping the student understand course concepts, develop proof strategies, and work through problems independently. I have a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Michigan, where my doctoral research under Philip Hanlon was in algebraic combinatorics. My graduate studies included combinatorics, symmetric functions, representation theory of the symmetric and general linear groups, and Schubert calculus. As an undergraduate, I took a combinatorics course from Lynne Butler based on Richard Stanley’s Enumerative Combinatorics, Volume 1, as well as a computer science course in discrete mathematics. My professional work in cryptology also made extensive use of discrete mathematics. When tutoring discrete mathematics, I emphasize understanding definitions through concrete examples, learning how to construct proofs rather than simply reading completed ones, and developing a systematic approach to unfamiliar problems. I particularly focus on helping students understand why an argument works and how to recognize which proof technique or mathematical idea is appropriate.
