About Brianna

Bio

Hi, I'm Brianna. First, a little of my history: I graduated from the Science and Math Academy in Aberdeen in 2009. I have about 75% of a degree in Middle School Math Education from Towson; I'm not currently enrolled for personal reasons, but I still adore teaching and tutoring as a side job to stay active in the world of education, work with children, and make a difference in the lives of the next generation.

I love math, and I also love explaining it to anybody (I've helped all ages, from 4th graders to a woman who was in her 50s returning to school) and seeing the look of comprehension and joy when they finally understand how the numbers and concepts fit together. I've taken a multitude of applicable classes at Harford Community and at Towson, and I know they'll help me to help YOU succeed in your classes.

For instance, when I tutor math, I draw lots of pictures, because that's how I usually think, and I think it helps most people understand as well. I also always work with a smile and a laugh, using examples and real life situations so it's not just numbers. A lot of students understand these concepts better if it's clear why they need them, how they can think about them (remember in early math classes when the teacher used bank accounts and owing people money to explain negative numbers?) and what other concepts it connects to. I also translate things into simple language so that students don't have to feel intimidated by the unfamiliar vocabulary that math classes can present. I remember what it's like to see this stuff for the first time, so I never expect anyone to automatically understand anything.

That's what I'm all about as a tutor and teacher -- making sure students don't just memorize the material, but truly understand it. Critical thinking skills are just as important as the basic math we use to teach them to you, and if I don't teach you how to look at a new problem and decide on your own how to solve it, then I'm doing something wrong as a teacher.

That idea doesn't just go for math, either.

ADHD

ADHD

I actually was diagnosed with ADD myself in sixth grade. I have been developing coping strategies for myself ever since, and while every student is different, I definitely understand the struggles that come from impulsivity and attention issues! Luckily for me, tutoring is one of my favorite things to do, so I stay motivated and focused the whole time -- and with my creativity and mental energy, I'm good at getting and holding students' attention. I'm also patient with students who get sidetracked easily, and will persist in reminding them to stay on task and remain focused.
Praxis

Praxis

I earned scores of 750+ on all 3 SAT subject areas when I took them in high school. I have been tutoring in grade school level math and English ever since. The Towson Middle School Education program accepts SAT scores in lieu of Praxis I, but I took a practice Praxis on the ETS website on my own and got a 96.
Psychology

Psychology

I have taken classes in Intro and Adolescent Psychology and received A's. I have studied other areas of Psychology on my own, and would be willing to attempt to help on classes that were related to ones I've taken.
Regents

Regents

The Regents exams are New York's state-specific, course-specific standardized tests for their students. Test-taking strategies for the Regents bear strong similarities to classic SAT-style strategies, which I am experienced in teaching. The content covered in the Regents Math exams is closely aligned to national Common Core standards for both knowledge and applications/skills, and I am qualified to teach these concepts and skills in all ages and levels of students from grades 3-8 through the course-specific Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II tests. I am additionally able to guide and support students who are preparing for the Science exams, particularly the grades 3-8 exams and the Living Environment and Physics. Lastly, I am able to support students taking the Chemistry exam with some advance notice and preparation.

Patient

My daughter struggles with school in general. Especially math though. Brianna was always very patient and kind. So much so that my daughter wanted to have her tutor her in every subject. Thank you.

Wonderful as always

Brianna is an excellent tutor. My daughter has worked with her consistently for about a year. She is very knowledgeable and she understands where kids can get stuck on problems. She asks a lot of questions to make sure they actually understand and she's super fun!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor!!!

I would highly recommend Brianna as a statistics tutor. Not having a strong mathematical background, Brianna went above and beyond to find new and creative ways to help me understand the intriguing world of statistics!!! I could not have been as successful in my coarse without her knowledge and patience.

Never showed up to session

I went to Brianna once and it went pretty well. We kept in touch throughout the week and she suggested where/when our next meeting would be. I went to the location and waited for AN HOUR. I checked the Wyzant messages and even directly texted her. That was over a week ago and I've yet to hear a word. Very unprofessional, rude, and down right confusing.

LifeSaver

Brianna was a lifesaver for me in my algebra class. She has an amazing knowledge of math. She was able to help me understand my course work. She was easy to work with and great at answering all of my questions and being able to explain the math work in a way that I could understand. I have had other tutors, but she was by far the best. She helped me bring up my grade. She was easy to make appointments with and meet in a public setting. She spent many hours with me. If I have to take anymore math classes I will be calling her to help me.
