I’m Sara! I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education (Elementary/Middle) along with Master’s Degree in Teaching At-Risk Students. In addition, I have a certification in Reading.

During my teaching career, I have worked in a wide variety of educational settings with students with various disabilities at multiple levels. Additionally, I have worked with general education students in a variety of settings. Throughout that time, I have developed multi-sensory lesson plans to meet the needs of auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic learners and incorporated various forms of technology, learning centers, and manipulatives to teach new concepts. My skills in differentiated instruction, assistive technology, and multi-sensory lesson planning allow me to meet the needs of every student. I am experienced in conducting day-to-day classroom curriculum activities, holding parent/guardian meetings, and coordinating with co-worker and other educational professionals.

It is my goal to combine my range of experience and leadership skills along with my ability to be a compassionate, enthusiastic, intelligent teacher who will make a positive contribution.

I have 7 years experience working as a Special Educator for BCPS. I previously have worked with non-diploma functional students with emotional disturbances. For the past 3 years I have taught a CALS (Autism) class. Working in the CALS classroom I have experience using Boardmaker to adapt materials, create picture schedules, and various visuals to assist the students in comprehension and communication. In addition, I have received training in the TEACCH method and use various different aspects of TEACCH in my classroom. Along with TEACCH I am also trained in discrete trial.

I'm certified to teach elementary education (K-6)and am a highly qualified teacher. When I was a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center, I specialized in tutoring elementary aged students. In addition, I have experience working with general education teachers to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of all students.
Handwriting

I have experience teaching students handwriting through Handwriting Without Tears and Zaner-Bloser Handwriting programs. I have taught students who are just beginning to learn handwriting to students who are learning cursive. I believe in using a hands-on, multi-sensory approach.
Phonics

I have experience teaching students using the SIPPS program (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words.) SIPPS is a program for struggling readers from kindergarten through 12th grade and provides a systemic approach to decoding that helps students gain reading fluency and comprehension. I also have experience teaching phonics through the Open Court program which provides a systematic instruction in phonological and phonemic awareness and phonics.
