My name is Luther K and I have spent more than thirty years working with teenagers at the middle school, high school and early university levels to help them prepare for success in American universities. This is called English for Academic Purposes.
I am drawn to tutoring because it removes grades. Tutoring outside the classroom is about learning and developing skills. My goal is not just to get my students accepted into their first choice college. My goal is to make sure they have the skill to succeed once they are admitted into their first choice college.
My credentials are extensive. I have a Master's Degree in Education specializing in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). I have taught overseas for twenty years, primarily at the university level at several different Japanese universities, including as a tenured professor at the age of 35. However, I realized that I enjoyed teaching more than research and wanted to make a greater impact on students, so I returned to the U.S. and switched to high school. I have spent fifteen years teaching in American middle school and high school intensive English programs, preparing students to learn in American high schools and go on to an American universities. I also had the opportunity to live and work in the Middle East in a large, multi-national corporation. At the university level, I have taught in Intensive English Programs at Hawaii Pacific University, Long Beach State University and Temple University.
One goal I place above all others is helping students become independent learners. Acceptance into an American university is only the beginning of the journey, not the end. A student must show up on Day 1 of freshman year to make their mark. This is the vision that is always in the back of my mind.
