I hold a PhD from Harvard University in the History of Science and a Masters degree in Political Theory from Indiana University, where I researched the relationship between politics and scientific authority. I have over five years of experience working directly with college students at Harvard, Indiana University, and MIT, where I served as both a teaching assistant and an instructor of record. I have taught students in classroom discussion sections, lectures, and in one-on-one tutoring. I earned a reputation as a fun, easy-going instructor and excellent communicator who works well with a wide range of students. I was particularly sought after as an instructor in reading and writing intensive courses for my ability to help students improve these skills no matter what level they came to me at. I meet students where they are and help them get where they want by using extensive feedback to work on improving existing strengths while overcoming any weaknesses.

At present, I am available to tutor high school, college, and adult and professional students online in practical skills you can use both inside and outside of the classroom. Whether you're looking to do historical research, philosophy, English and literature, the social sciences, or just writing and reading in general. Do you need to learn good historical methods, improve your research skills, sharpen your analytical ability, or deepen your interpretive and communication skills? These are just a few of the practical skills I can help you with. Please reach out to find out if I'm the right tutor for you!

When I'm not buried in books and archival materials, I enjoy homebrewing and foraging. I am currently turning my PhD dissertation into a book for public audiences.

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

As a Harvard-trained PhD in the History of Science, I am available to tutor you on historical subjects, particularly those related to the skills involved in doing historical research. Are you looking to improve your historical chops, learn how to use an archive, get better at working with primary and secondary sources, or refine your research question? Looking to get better at reading or writing about history? My goal is always to give students the foundational skills they need so that they no longer need my services! I'm looking forward to working with you.
Literature

Literature

Did you know that literature, science, and philosophy were rarely seen as separate things before the Enlightenment? Natural scientists frequently wrote literature and philosophical treatises before the modern era. As a Harvard-trained historian of science, I have a wide familiarity with the history of cultural artifacts and human knowledge, including classic writings in philosophy, science, and literature. I love working with students to better understand not just the meaning of texts, but also the ways that those texts were part of their historical moment and drew on contemporary scientific theories, political events, and cultural habits.
Philosophy

Philosophy

Prior to earning a PhD in the History of Science from Harvard University, I earned a Masters degree in political philosophy from Indiana University. I continue my interest in this subject and am available to tutor subjects and thinkers in political philosophy. My strengths are in the works of Plato, Nietzsche, Arendt, and Foucault, but I am familiar with the major thinkers in the Western canon and have a side interest in Eastern political philosophy. Reach out if you're curious about whether I can help: sometimes I even surprise myself with my expertise! I am always honest with students about whether or not I will be the best tutor for your needs.
Reading

Reading

As a Harvard-trained PhD and historian of science, I have extensive experience analyzing texts across a wide-variety of sources and fields. Whether you want to learn how to better analyze fiction or non-fiction, memoirs, scientific papers, scholarly essays, newspapers and other popular media, film, historical documents, philosophical treatises, government documents, or bureaucratic letters, I can help you learn how to properly evaluate and understand a wide variety of textual materials.
Social Studies

Social Studies

As a Harvard trained PhD in the History of Science with Masters degrees in Social Science (University of Chicago) and Political Science (Indiana University), I have extensive experience as a working social scientist. Whether you need to understand social scientific theories, movements, methods, or papers; are looking for help with a research project; or want to work on your reading and writing skills, I am available to work with you. My strengths are in political theory and history and the history of science, but I have a wide range of interests and may be able to help in other areas like anthropology, political science, or sociology depending on the nature of your project. Please reach out and we can discuss if I'm the right tutor for you!
Writing

Writing

As a published author and historian, my writing -- whether narrative non-fiction, historical exposition, or even bureaucratic memos -- has been called "beautiful," "magisterial," and "fluid....easy to read and a delight." I am available to offer tutoring on any part of the writing process and in multiple genres. Scientific papers, memoirs, business letters, journalistic essays? You name it! Whether you need help brushing up your language, making your logic flow better, identifying a thesis statement, or narrowing down on a question, chances are I can help. Just reach out and let me know what you're working on, and I will gladly get back to let you know if it falls in my areas of expertise.

Insightful, encouraging, creative

Alexis gave me the inspiration I needed to get my writing back on the right track. They helped me target the parts that were working well and edit out the things that were bogging it down. We were able to identify the core of what I wanted to say and shape it into the best possible form for what I wanted it to be. I can’t say enough good things about Alexis as a tutor! They are smart, and they have a way of cutting right through all the BS and getting to the meat of what matters in the text. I am so much more confident in my work and so much more ready to send it out into the world! Highly recommend them as a tutor!
