My name is Seth Spinner, and I have spent my entire career thus far working with young adults to help them gain confidence, independence, and empowerment as they navigate their school and personal lives as writers and readers. I have over 17 years of classroom teaching experience, with the last 11 specifically focusing on teaching writing and connecting it to various content areas and purposes.

I find the connection between teacher/tutor and student to be incredibly meaningful and important. I really try to understand the students with whom I work, both personally and academically, and I am honest and share about myself as well, always within the boundaries of a professional relationship. It's crucial to me that students see me as an ally and guide, not as a taskmaster or punitive force. I individualize my instruction to meet the needs of those working with me, as no two students are exactly the same, and all people work better and more authentically when they know they can bring their true selves into their learning experiences.

I can help students with all tasks relevant within humanities classes at the middle and high school level, and I can bring existing supportive resources or create new ones to provide tangible guidelines and ensure that the skills work we do is transferable beyond our sessions.

I have taught writing for over 17 years. Over the last 11 years, I taught a writing-intensive course to middle schoolers, with the first 7 occurring at a public middle school in New Hampshire and the final four at a private school in Maryland. I have a deep understanding of what makes writing challenging for students at the middle and high school levels and what strategies and resources mitigate this difficulty.

Grammar

Grammar

I pride myself on my deep understanding of English grammar, and I use this to help students find the most effective way to use language to express their ideas.
Literature

Literature

I have a BA in English and American Literature from Brandeis University, and I have taught literature analysis for the past 6 years. While I have no read everything available, I am always looking for and engaging new opportunities to expand my portfolio of read authors. With this said, I prefer to focus more on the skills necessary to effectively engage literature of any type, as these skills transcend the works themselves and provide students with the confidence necessary to succeed with any text presented to them in high school, college, and beyond.
Proofreading

Proofreading

For the past 3 years, I taught a writing intensive course in which I helped students use a cohesive writing process to plan, draft, revise, and finalize essays. I actively worked with students to proofread their writing, and I have a passion for helping students through this process to lead them to mastery in writing of any kind.
Reading

Reading

Given the impressive variety of written forms students encounter in school, developing solid, reliable reading skills is essential. Throughout my 6 years of teaching, I have helped students develop active reading strategies, analytical tools, and reflective checks that made any text seem much more approachable.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

SAT writing is all about being concise and effectively communicating complex ideas through correct use of the English language. Through use of examples and practice prompts, I will help students learn how to approach any type of prompt and successfully plan for and execute a stellar SAT essay.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary development is essential for effective communication. While expectations for vocabulary are often lax or unclear, helping students cultivate an enriched library of words they can use at any time will make the transitional process between educational levels a much smoother process.
Writing

Writing

Writing is my subject of choice. I have lead many students to a more comfortable understanding of the writing process, helping them develop the tools to approach any writing assignment with style and aplomb. I stress the importance of peer review, as my philosophy is that no writing assignment will be as successful as when the creator uses those he/she trusts to help perfect the final product.
