I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Secondary English with a PhD in English Language and Literature, an MAEd in Reading / Literacy, and an MAT in Secondary Education. I have a Maryland Teaching Certificate in Secondary English, K-12 Special Education, and K-12 Reading. I originally trained as a Mathematics teacher (focusing on Algebra and Geometry), and I switched to English my Junior year of undergrad. I currently teach at both the College and Secondary levels in American Literature, World Literature, and Creative Writing disciplines.
I have over 20 years experience teaching and tutoring students at all levels, including crafting essays, analyzing text, and preparing for the SATs in both Verbal and Math sections. Part of my experience includes working with a nonprofit and an urban school district to provide SAT and college preparation support for 4 years from the summer of 2020 to the winter of 2024. I have vast experience using Socratic methods in order to engage students within their lessons and to gain long term mastery. I have also worked as a Special Educator at the Secondary Level handling every subject in both co--teaching and one-on-one settings. I have also worked with students in public school, private school, and homeschool, and I have worked with students from K-12 and college levels.
My approach to tutoring is student centered and goal centered. I am a believer in Universal Design for Learning and backward design, which is to work back from a goal to figure out each step necessary to build to that objective. I am also a believer in understanding the student's background and mindset and incorporating them into lessons to craft high impactful and high interesting materials.
