I grew up on a small farm in Eastern Washington State. I was homeschooled in high school and graduated a year early. I was accepted to many many excellent colleges and universities and ultimately chose Oberlin College. There, I studied Music Education and Composition and met my wife / life-long best friend. We married and moved to Baltimore, MD to attend Johns Hopkins University for grad school, she in nursing, I in computer science and instructional design. We raised two terrific children in Baltimore, both of whom are now in college. I taught computer science for seventeen years in elite magnet high schools in and around Baltimore.
In addition to teaching, I consulted on Cybersecurity and myriad facets of IT among the intelligence community. I was approached about writing an IT certification preparation book about ten years ago. I gave it a shot. They liked it and asked about another. Eventually, I was authoring curriculum and textbooks from Pearson, Cisco Press, IBM Press, Que, and others. This allowed me to retire early from teaching and raise my two children mostly full time. I have presented at conferences all over regarding teaching, writing, IT topics, and exam prep. I recently began working one-on-one with bright young minds on robotics, programming, automation, cybersecurity, exam preparation, college prep, and 3D engineering. Writing and teaching are great but nothing quite compares to working with truly gifted students preparing them for future excellence. That is what I really love to do.
My ability to explain complicated things in many different ways in order to find the method that best facilitates learning for the individual child.
I am semi-retired and thus my schedule is very flexible. In-home tutoring is great but it is so often full of distractions. I rather enjoy meeting students at local coffee shops, Wegmans, bookstores, and so on. Usually, the coffee is my treat. Hope to hear from you soon!
