About John

I’ve always been fascinated with the process of how we come to believe in ourselves (self-efficacy), and how that process helps us to establish an identity and become capable adults. During the adolescent years, this is the most pressing psychosocial issue.

I am blessed to have three sons, each one with different interests. As they were growing up I immersed myself into coaching sports, leading scout packs and troops, teaching religious education, and leading youth ministry. My involvement in these activities gave me many platforms to practice coaching/teaching/mentoring. Working with youth is my passion. I have been a full-time mathematics teacher and tutor in middle and high schools; earned MSDE certification in Secondary Mathematics; hold a BS Degree in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute; and completed master's degree courses at the University of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Maryland. I have worked as a Civil Engineer for 33 years and can bring real life examples into the classroom.

My teaching approach begins with forming and nurturing trusting relationships, as students will not allow themselves to be guided without a positive and trusting relationship. It also focuses on satisfying the student’s needs for competence, autonomy, relationships with others, and fun. I will never charge you for my services if those services are deemed to be unsatisfactory. Our first meeting is an opportunity to get acquainted and is free. I like to use the internet resources for practice outside of tutoring sessions to help students reinforce skills and allow me to assess progress. Fees for online sites are included in my tutoring fee. Students may call me for guidance outside of tutoring sessions for free. Convenient locations for tutoring sessions will be determined.

I am looking forward to assisting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra was my favorite subject in high school. In addition, I took Algebra courses in college as part of the civil engineering degree that I earned.

While working as a civil engineer for 33 years, I applied my algebra skills to solve many practical problems.

I have taught Algebra at a High School and at a Middle School. I scored well in the Algebra Section of the PRAXIS II Mathematics Content Knowledge Test and scored 100% on the WyzAnt Algebra test. I have 5 years experience tutoring Algebra before and after school.

Algebra 2

Algebra and Algebra II were my favorite subject in high school. In addition, I took Algebra II courses in college as part of the civil engineering degree that I earned.

While working as a civil engineer for 33 years, I applied my Algebra II skills to solve many practical problems. I have taught Algebra II at Saint Vincent Pallotti High School to high school juniors.

I scored well in the Algebra Section of the PRAXIS II Mathematics Content Knowledge Test and scored 100% on the WyzAnt Algebra II test.

Geometry

My experience with Geometry includes passing high school and college level courses, employing learned skills in solving practical problems during my 33 year career as a civil engineer, teaching geometry to middle and high school students, tutoring students before and after school, and passing the Geometry Section on the PRAXIS II Mathematics Content Knowledge Test.

I scored 100% on the WyzAnt Geometry test.

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra involves visualizing in two or more dimensions. I have had a lot of experience applying Linear Algebra concepts in solving practical problems involving systems of equations. In addition I have taken college level Physics, Dynamics, and Statics in which much attention is given to the study of vectors.

I recently passed the PRAXIS II Mathematics Content Knowledge Test which contained problems from the field of Linear Algebra including solving Matrices.

Prealgebra

I have taught middle school Mathematics at a middle school in Rockville for the past five years.

Precalculus

I took Calculus courses in college as part of the civil engineering degree that I earned. While working as a civil engineer for 33 years, I applied my calculus skills to solve many practical problems.

I scored well in the Calculus Section of the PRAXIS II Mathematics Content Knowledge Test and scored 100% on the WyzAnt Algebra II test.

Probability

Probability and Statistics topics are fun to learn about and to teach. I can easily apply those topics to everyday life for almost any person.

My experiences with Probability and Statistics include, taking college level courses, teaching high school and middle school level courses, using those skills during my 33 year career as a civil engineer, tutoring 8th graders on those topics for taking the High School Placement Tests, and successfully completing the PRAXIS II Mathematics Content Knowledge Test and WyzAnt Probability Test.

Public Speaking

My educational background includes successful completion of the Dale Carnegie Course on "Effective Communications and Human Relations" in 1985 and recent certification in Speaker Training through the John Maxwell Team. I have over 40 years of public/business speaking experience as a Senior Leader in the Montgomery County Department of Public Works and the Associate Director of the Office of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese of Washington, D. AMAZING Tutor!

John was great! He took the time to get some information about what you were learning before the tutoring session. He arrived to the session on time and fully prepared with notes and graphs to help you learn. He typed up a notes page for helpful information and let you keep all notes and graphs. He took the time to explain things clearly and didn't move on until you were comfortable with the m
