I have a degree in English and a Master's degree in teaching English. I taught middle school language arts and writing for 8 years, then quit teaching to stay home with my children. For the past 13 years I have been a homeschool teacher, teaching all subjects to my children through elementary school into middle school, as well as leading multiple classes for other homeschooled children. These classes have included a readers' workshop for lower elementary school children, a writing class for upper elementary school children, a writing class for middle school children, and book clubs for all ages up to high school, as well as a geography course, hands-on science classes, a current events class, and a science fiction club. I am very comfortable working with children of all ages and enjoy seeking out or creating resources to meet the needs of the children I am teaching.
The thing I love about teaching/tutoring is working with the children and getting to know them. Every kid is different, and I love finding the exact right thing that they need to spark their learning. I like providing individualized instruction to children, because that is something it is difficult to provide in schools and it is often what children having difficulty in school are lacking- an approach that tailors the material directly to them, in a way they can understand it. I love when kids get excited about what they are learning, when they realize that they can understand it and they can excel, given the right learning materials and the right approach. The best part about teaching is seeing a kid excited to keep learning.
I have a degree in English and a Master's degree in teaching English, and I taught middle school language arts in public school for 8 years. I have very strong writing skills and an excellent knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. I have taught both of my own children to read using different phonics-based approaches, and both are middle school aged, but reading on an upper high school level. I have experience teaching writing, reading, and literature discussion to multiple age groups within the homeschool community.
I am interested in helping your child to be their best and excel in the classroom. I will customize my lessons and resources to meet the unique needs of your child. I have worked with children in many different capacities for the last 20 years, and I enjoy getting to know them, and working with them to help them succeed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
