Hello! I’m Louis. I can help you understand difficult concepts, provide tips to double-check your work, build self-confidence, develop study skills, catch up on your homework, or prepare for your exams.

I have taught at the university level at the University of Virginia, and at Dickinson College. Prior to teaching, I was a note taker for some of my visually impaired colleagues. I’ve been tutoring formally for about two years now, mostly mathematics. My approach is patient and encouraging, and tailored to your needs.

My background is rather eclectic. I was born in Montréal, Canada, and lived there for the first 25 years of my life. I acquired a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal while I was living there. Then I moved to the USA. Here, I acquired a master's in South Asia Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, and then a Ph.D. in Religion from the University of Virginia. I’ve also studied for a time in India, and Taiwan.

Great Math Tutor

According to my son, Louis explains math concepts in a way that is easy to understand. He feels that his math skills have improved since he began sessions with Louis.

Meh

I was upset by the way he taught the lesson. We were having technical difficulties for 33 minutes but instead of rescheduling he wanted to convince me to use another platform and then when it still didn’t work he continued to wait. After 33 minutes our technical issues have resolved but then he spent another 12 minutes redirecting me to matcha website because he couldn’t copy and paste the work pages I sent him. I have never had this issue with any other tutor not being able to paste the photo files I sent them onto the Wyzant boards. So he actually spend like 15 minutes actually teaching me anything. Despite this he still charged me the full amount for a one hour lesson despite us having a 15 minute lesson in reality.

I am saddened at learning that this student is upset. My tutoring sessions do not typically unfold the way it did here. What this student says is factually true, for the most part, but it contains significant omissions. We actually had met the day before, and we had already rescheduled once because we couldn’t connect. Even though it was our second attempt, the student still came to me unprepared. Their camera and their audio did not work. Contrarily to what this student asserts, I was not “waiting.” I was troubleshooting the problem. I tried things on my end to see if the problem was on my side. I asked questions and made suggestions regarding what they could do. It took about half an hour to fix this issue. Then when the time came to show their math problems, they demonstrated that they were still unprepared. We have plenty of options regarding file format, but this student sent me files in a format that the Wyzant Learning Studio cannot load. I was still able to see the math problems but was unable to load them into the Studio. It was the first time I ran into this specific problem. Ultimately, my time, whether it is spent troubleshooting technical problems, or tutoring is valuable.

My son had to retake a math test that he did not original do well in. After working with Louis-Dominique, he was able to double his score. This is why I am very appreciative of websites like Wyzant and their tutors.
