Hi, I'm Julia! I have a degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and I have recently finished a certificate of Data Science at Harford Community College. I grew up passionate about math and science, and I strongly believe that anyone can be good at STEM subjects -- it's the teacher that makes the difference!
I have tutored in several capacities in the past, including with Honor Society as a high school student, informally in college, and as an official tutor with StudyPoint, an SAT/ACT prep program. In all three of these positions, I worked one on one, and with small groups of students on mathematics, professional writing, and other subjects, including Chemistry and Physics. I also worked as a TA for Intro to Biological Systems Engineering at UNL and for AP Physics at Jackson High School. In both roles, I assisted students when needed with homework and lecture questions, graded assignments, and assisted with in-class activities and course organization.
My tutoring experience is primarily with high school or early college students in math and science. I am a practice-focused tutor, which means I focus on example problems and asking my students questions when they struggle. I find that this develops problem-solving skills and encourages concept-based comprehension. I present the student with a problem and then ask them to explain how they might begin solving it, based on their knowledge. By asking the student where they would start in the problem, I am able to gauge how much they already understand and build from there.
As someone who has struggled with learning difficulties, I understand the challenges that students face in traditional education and I have an unconventional approach to study techniques that I hope to share with students who also struggle with motivation and focus. I had excellent teachers, tutors, and peers who supported me through school and were invaluable to my education. Now, I hope to be a part of that support network for the students of today!
